Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? - May 2012

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

Chicago

Drove from Long Island, NY to Chicago, IL (actually Oak Park), about 875 miles. Going wasn't bad. Coming back we hit rain in PA, that plus the dark plus poor night vision made the trip somewhat harrowing at times.

home to work and back again

In the daily grind this week, hoping to get out and about in a couple of weeks. No major issues locally though and the weather has been pleasant enough smile

New Orleans and Baton Rouge

My last big trip was to Louisiana, where I ventured between New Orleans and Baton Rouge (and various point in between). About 20 miles north of Baton Rouge, I drove across the newest bridge across the Mississippi (which, of course, doesn't appear on my GPS yet!).

There I was...

...leaving the airport with my trusty Android/Google Maps trying to find my way to my hotel and...nothing! I have a map, but no directions. Fortunately, it was not too difficult, so I used the old fashioned method (I followed the signs) to the freeway and knew my way from there as I had been to this place before.

Once I got checked in at the hotel, I started to troubleshoot why I didn't have a GPS signal. Turns out that my Samsung GS2 remembers the last "state" it was in. Meaning when I drain the battery below 50% and it shuts off the GPS, the next time I start my phone after charging it, guess what? The GPS is still off! rolleyes Ergo, no GPS for routing me on my trip to my hotel.

At least now I know, and for those of you who might not have known before, be forewarned! wink

Garmin very handy to navigate unfamiliar streets, especially some odd large intersections where no left hand turns were permitted, and U-turns were required to stay on route.

Just drove around

Repaired 3 885t units this weekend and drove around Long Island testing them out..

Trip to Pensacola

As reported earlier, my 2460LMT missed directed on two way points.

My research seems to indicate the problem stemmed from using Google Earth to find location then transferring result to GPS.

Guess I should have done a better cross check.

Tucson to Winkleman. Boy, that town is like a ghost town.

nyc

I took a trip into the city the other day. I left the vehicle at home and used the device to navigate. The 1490's battery lasted 40 minutes..cz

Cullman, Alabama

Took my daughter's family to Cullman to the Ave Maria Grotto. Used the Garmin to find a restaurant.

next trip

next weekend, I have an 1100 mile trip planned with my GPS. The feature I demand most, is to be able to make planned routes on my computer and download it to my GPS for us as is.

So, I planned out not only all of my roads, but I also planned each gasoline stop, each meal break and overnight stop for the trip.

That way, I know that the place I want to stop at is built into the route, close to the road I'm traveling and at the time/distance I want to stop.

Just need to follow my instructions while on the trip - no further decisions need to be made on the road.

Went to Palm Springs...

for my granddaughter's birthday, and used it there to find various stores that sold party favors, etc. My sense of direction is what some people might call "wanting" so, I love what these things do for me, even the old(er) ones I have. My daughter is worse off than I, as far as being born with the benefit of a bad sense of direction, and uses hers every time she gets in her SUV. She would cut your throat from ear to ear if you ever took it from her!

Turkey Run

4 hour drive to Turkey Run State Park in Indiana, and a separate custom route 'tour' to a number of covered bridges in the area. Backed up my POIs and route to a new eTrex in addition to the hiking waypoints I had preloaded on the eTrex.

Had a great trip

To Arlington Vs. and visited the national cemetery, Air and Space, and the national mall all in one day. Then to Charlotte, then to Atlanta, then back to Ohio. Great week of travel. Best of all was able to get two free casino hotel room for free.

Delaware

Took a ride to the in-laws' house in Delaware for the Memorial Day weekend.

My Last Trip

Drove to Charlottsville, VA from Washington, DC for the graduation from UVA of a friend receiving a MS in Materials Engineering. Nice area.

Good weather a week ago. NOT like today & tomorrow. Of course, there's always sub-tropical storm Beryl to contend with furth south along the east coast.

Fred

Cook's Forest

Small group of motorcycles cruising on a day trip yesterday. Eventually made it to Cook's Forest, PA. Very busy with the tourists and the river was full boaters, canoes, floaters and swimmers too. Still a nice little 250 mile ride.

nest trip

Don't have any specific plans, but now that gas prices have started to ease I guess I can figure something out. Still taking a while for them to come down in Chicago and area, but I saw a dime drop today compared to yesterday at a station I report price on.

Took a camping trip to

Took a camping trip to Mexico (PA that is). My wife and I did a little geocaching while we were out and about. Without a GPS, that is one hard search! Trust me, we've been out when my GPS has died and kept trying.

last trip

Down to Carbondale, Il to see son graduate from college. I have made the trip many times, but leaving the Chicago area always gets confusing, at least to me. I am getting older. smile)
