map update from garmin

I am looking for advice on how Garmin updates maps. I just bought a Nuvi 2370 LT which comes with North America and Europe maps. The start-up manual says I get, "one free map update within 60 days of acquiring satellites." My question is: are the two maps considered as one for the update and both will be updated or is each map "one" map requiring one or the other to be updated and if so can I choose which map I want updated?
Additionally, will the unit have enough built in memory for the update or will I have to purchase a memory card before doing the map update?
Thank you for the help.

2370LT

Since that model includes both maps, it would make sense that both maps would get upgraded. The whole purpose of the "one free map update" is to ensure that when you buy it, you can have the latest and greatest maps when you buy it, even if it was sitting on some shelf for 6 months.

As far as storage goes, I'm guessing it has 8GB of storage and if it currently holds both, then it should be able to handle a few upgrades.

updates

The US and EU updates do not happen at the same time.

You will need to look into when the last EU map was updated. It usually precedes the US map update.

The last US map update was in Feb so the next one should be at the end of May/early June.

The

The next North American update should be out this week or next. It is already loaded on the Garmin servers which normally happens 7 to 10 days prior to release.

Map Update From Garmin (Response)

Thanks to all who responded to my questions about the map updates. The following is the response from Garmin I just received. FYI. Note the 90 day period instead of the manual's 60 day.
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

You are going to be able to update both maps, North America and Europe, one time each for free as long as it is done within the first 90 days. I do believe you will need a 2gb or 4gb sd card to make both maps fit since they both have grown in size.

I find it very interesting - and a bit disconcerting - that you will have to add a SD card to a new unit to accommodate the very first updates of originally installed maps.

Can this really be correct?

I assume that you have made a complete backup of the new unit!!!!!!!!

When you do a "Properties" on the new unit (which contains two substantial maps I'll admit), how much free space does it say you have?

Map Updates

I never realized that the map updates for North America and Europe were released at different times. Thank you for alerting to this fact.

Yes they are not released at the same time. Europe usually gets it first.

I think the new GPS devices come with a lot more memory. The 2390-LT should have at least 6-8GB. He would not require an extra memory card. The unit may already have that extra card.

Would you be kind enough to share that link so that we can periodically check for futur map updates as we do for the software upgrades.

Sorry, I don't have a link, just information from a friend that has access to the dates that Garmin loads new map updates to their servers.

Do you think that after the next map is released, your contact person might know the filename of the large manually-installed jcv file associated with the map update that many of us use and the Garmin link to download it?

thanks,

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm sure

I'm sure we can get the file name and link to it but we may not need it.

The last 2 large files have been stored on the Garmin servers in the same place. They appear to be available within 48 hours (or less) of the map update being released. The location appears to be:

http://download.garmin.com/support/

followed by /the map release number folder/NA/JV/the JV file name for the specific map release. So the location for the latest large JV file is:

http://download.garmin.com/support/2012_40/NA/JV/D3060050A.J...

and the location of the large file for map release 2012.30 was:

http://download.garmin.com/support/2012_30/NA/JV/D3060040A.J...

Hopefully Garmin will continue to use this file system and we will be able to easily find the large file in the future. If so, the next one should be:

http://download.garmin.com/support/2013_10/NA/JV/D3060060A.J...

if the system remains the same.

UPDATE: I just checked and the 2012.30 and 2012.40 large JV files are still available in the locations I noted above. So far it looks good that the file system hasn't changed.

Nuvi 2370 LT Size

Yes, the first thing I did was to back up the entire unit to my hard drive. After that I deleted all voices except English_American_.VPM at 1,094 KB; English_American_Jack.VPM at 13,580 KB; English_American_Jill.VPM at 15,582 KB; Francais_European_.VPM at 815 KB; and Francais_European_Sebastian_.VPM at 14,912 KB.

After those voice deletions from the unit, it now shows Capacity = 7,868,592,128 bytes or 7.32 GB
Used = 6.76 GB
Free = 574 MB (Note megabytes here)

I will definitely be getting a memory card, probably another 8 GB just to be safe.

Again, thanks to all of you on this site for your help and contributions. You all deserve a nice pat on the back - good work.
Thanks
Bob

Interesting how you can

Interesting how you can update the NA and EU maps separately. Nice that Garmin can put the maps on the SD card.

Personally, I had some bad experiences with SD cards, and now I only buy the sandisk brand.

Garmin really does not get it, do they?

7.32 GB and still only 574 MB free on a brand new unit...congenital idiocy or dropped on their heads?
