New 3590 Questions

I just picked up the new Garmin 3590LMT and am in the process of getting it road ready. The first thing out of the box after charging the battery I changed the unit to Mass Storage and did a complete backup. Next I registered the unit and began the map upgrade process. The unit came with maps version 2012.20 and version D3191020A.JCV of Junction View. After updating to version 2012.40 of maps I also how have version D3191040A.JCV. I then made another backup of that configuration.

I have also downloaded the 775 MB version of Junction View but here is where I have a few questions. I read somewhere that the only difference between the 460 mb version and the 775 mb versions of JV is that the 775 mb version is for units that support full scree, is that true? I believe the 3590 supports half screen but I an not sure if it supports full screen as I have not even had the unit in the car to try it out yet. Does the 3590 support full screen? Also at what point does the screen change to show you the JV? Is it a set distance from the junction such as a mile or two or does the view change when the announcement is made to make the proper turn or lane change?

So what version if JV should I use, half screen or full? If I decide to use the full screen 775 mb version do I just copy the file to the JCV folder and delete, move or just rename the smaller file? Do I have to change the name of the JV file to match the existing file name that came with the 2012.40 update to make it work?

Next up is to change the POI MP3 files to WAV files so it is off to look for threads dealing with that process. It sure would be nice to have both types of files available here on POI Factory so if I can find an easy process that may be a nice rainy day project.

Thanks to all the posters here on POI Factory as you have made getting the 3590 road worthy a very painless and easy process. Thanks again.

This would be a great time to use Simulation to see what happens in various situations.

Think of some places you have been that have complex junctions. Change your current location to some place within a mile of that point and then navigate to a point past the junction. See visually what happens. All from the comfort of your home.

I have a 3790 and it

I have a 3790 and it supports half screen JV. The file I've been using is smaller 400+ MB. My other unit uses full screen JV and that file is 700+ MB. I haven't noticed a single JV on one unit that is missing from the other unit. I personally prefer half screen JV. It pops up around 0.9-0.8 miles ahead of JV and stays all way through. On the unit with full screen JV it pops up about the same time, but then disappears after 2-3 seconds. If I was you I wouldn't bother with other (bigger file) and would use the one provided by Garmin for my unit.

The

The 700+MB JV file and the 400+MB one have the same number of views. The difference is that the larger file has only full screen views mode while the small file has only half screen views.

As has been pointed out, the full screen view only stays on the screen for a short period and not through the turn/maneuver being displayed.

IMO your better off with the smaller file supplied by the map update but if you want to use the larger file just download it and use it. You'll not need to rename it although you're probably better off MOVING the original file off your Nuvi. Again you really not gaining anything by using the larger file.

Here is a really easy program for converting your MP3 files to WAV:

Thanks guy for the input. I took the unit out for a spin today with the smaller JV file loaded and I liked the way it operated. The warning came on at about .8 of a mile from the junction and stayed on until I passed the junction. For long trips into unknown areas I think this would be better that something being full screen for a few seconds.

Thanks for the link for converting the MP3 files to WAV as I will be giving that a try.

All in all I was impressed with the 3590 but there is still a lot to play with. I noticed that I did not get the recalculating warning every time I turned off the given route.

3590LMT do you

have a problem with brightness of the screen like some of the users are having. I want one, but this problem is stopping me from buying one.

I deliberately picked 3750

I deliberately picked 3750 without all the junction, 3D and other fancy stuff. A simple line graph is more than enough.

Screen Brightness

I have had no problem with screen brightness either at night or in full daylight. I think I had it set to 70%. I did have to adjust the angle a few times because of sun glare.

On a recent 200 mile trip I had a chance to play with the unit a bit more. Features that I liked is the ability to turn the unit 90 degrees as that gave me a better view of the route ahead. I had also set up a road avoidance for a local section of interstate that was closed in one direction. I knew that this feature may not work as intended and that was the case. The west bound lanes were open while the eastbound were closed. The 3590 kept trying to reroute the trip west but the return trip was rerouted properly. I think that to really get this option to work it may have to give you the option to be a the lane coordinates level. Not a big thing but just something I wanted to try.

The voice command worked well as did the SmartPhone link. I liked the option that gave you the services available at the next exit but I wish it would have included services from the added POI files. For example it would show a Berger King but not a McDonald's and I had the McDonald's POI loaded.

The only issues I had were the icons that I had for speed traps did not appear on the screen but I did get the voice alerts. I just wish there was a way to get the POI icons to be bigger on the screen.

Thank You

for the information on the 3590LMT.

POI Icons...

I have been pretty pleased with the 3590, until this last update. That install fouled up Junction views and lumped all my custom POIs into one mass instead of the sub categories they had been in, but those issues are for another post when I have more time...

The POIs in general, and the custom ones in particular, are seemingly shown at random. This may be good a good thing in that if they were all shown the screen would sometimes be very, very full. But it could be implemented better. We could be given the choice of which POIs we want displayed (e.g. restaurants but not gas stations and ATMs).

My real point was regarding the size of the POI icons. When loading my custom POIs I found the icons to be half the size of the built-in ones. So, I simply made larger icons and they work very well. 48x48 seems best, to my eye at least. (I believe the 50x50 ones I tried may have been trimmed when displayed.) The unfortunate part is that most need to be remade from scratch as enlarging the 24x24 icons made fuzzy, indistinct images. And, alas, there are apparently no "large size" icons available on this site.

Buying a GPS unit is often a matter of trade-offs between what features and functions you want and what are offered on the various units. In my opinion, most things about the 3590 are very good, though some could be improved. Of course, people's preferences differ...

I cannot seem to find how to do this on my 3590lmt.

How do you change your current location? For example, I would like to start in a city other than my current location and navigate (in simulation mode) to a different city.

Thanks

3590lmt Simulation

Thanks for the detailed info! I tried it and it worked fine.

Another question:
How can I edit the turn-by-turn list on a particular route? In one case, it shows a road to turn on that I know is not correct. Can this turn be edited, deleted or changed?

Thanks again.

Routes

Can not edit the built in directions by Garmin. You do need to report errors see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6943 .You can set up avoidance for specific lengths of road see https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

Probably

@jay9779

Probably not. The item in question is probably in the map data which is not user correctable. Your better off reporting the error to Nokia/Navteq using the MapReporter feature on their website.

See https://mapreporter.navteq.com/#dashboard for the place to start.
