You live in Tampa and the OP in NY and you say Miami is dangerous?

Thinks to look for when in Miami:
Pretty women

Excellent food (if you like seafood or Spanish food)

Many RLC but heck NY has them too.

Traffic congestion, never ending road construction, but heck you are from NY

Rude drivers don't expect courtesy on the road, but heck you are from NY

When driving be assertive, drive as crazy as the locals, never indicate lane changes.

If you get cut in traffic don’t use middle finger unlike NY many people there carry a gun.

Because recent happenings in Sanford FL I would avoid driving through certain areas of Miami.

Dress like a native, (no shorts with running shoes and black socks)

Because of the way the city was designed by the drunken settlers a GPS with yesterday’s map is a must.

But whatever you do enjoy Miami and as much as you may like the city refrain from moving south, we already have enough New Yorkers.

NYC drivers aren't very rude, and I'd even say most are courteous while aggressive. In Miami, they are rude and incompetent. I've been unfortunate enough to visit a number of times for work, best thing about the trip is the flight back home grin

Second

I would second the "Don't".

South Beach...

Alot of fun....
This is the older part of Miami and the heart of the Art deco district, beaches are wonderful, and it is a young hip and very lively area. This is place to be for visitors wishing to party and to go out the Miami way. It is a small district where every place of interest is within walking distance, the shopping varies with Lincoln Road and Collins Avenue and the dining experience is fantastic. The best way to "commute" within South Beach is by bicycle. The area is filled with the best of Miami hotels, boutique hotels as well as large establishments. Miami Vacation rentals apartments are also readily available. Visitors will walk in an open air museum in the middle of the largest collection of Art Deco buildings

Funny but sad

Though unfortunately, the hoodie has become a means for some people to profile criminal conduct.

Have fun, and don't get any tickets or anything that you will need to treat with medicine.

We go to the Florida Keys every winter

We go to the Florida Keys every winter ... and usually spend a week or two in the Miami area ...

Don't know where you are coming from, but it is well worth the money to take the toll road down to Miami. The other roads are often jammed with traffic and wrecks.

By the by ... the toll booths in southern Florida have NO TOLL Booths ... you need to buy a Florida Sun Pass at various drug stores, grocery, or even at an oasis on the toll road itself.

We enjoy the various Cuban restaurants and coffee shops.

Yes, there is crime in the area ... but use your head and you will be ok.

Make sure you make the 50 mile long drive into the Everglades from Homestead Fl, just southwest of Miami, down to Flamingo. Take the various hikes.

Garmin 205, 260W, 1450LMT, 2460LMT, HEREwego for iPhone ... all still mapping strong.

definitley will do. planning

Cocunut Grove (don't stray from downtown)

Calle Ocho aka SW 8th Street (wonderful mix of Latin influenced restaurants and nightlife but a bit peligrosso so be careful)

Seaquarium

Vizcaya

Brickell Boulevard

South Beach along Ocean Drive (a must at night)

Tamiami Trail drives you right through alligator country and is as desolate as Mars in places

Depending on how much time you have...a drive along A1A to and through Palm Beach will let you see some incredible homes along the Ocean

Again, depending on your time...Las Olas in Ft Lauderdale; Mizner Park in Boca Raton...City Place in W Palm Beach...

South Florida has been my "second home" since 1981; know most of it as well as I know Philly. And, yeah...if you have a firearm and a permit, take it...most likely FLA recognizes your license to carry.

enjoy your trip

1. Try to avoid being killed.
2. Once you get on the highway, avoid taking the exits, they can be dangerous.
3. If attacked by a black youth who wants to kill you it is no longer permissible to defend yourself, even if you are a "minority" member yourself.

thanks

just curious

I wonder if the person who went to Miami is still alive.

(damn) yankee

That's the difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee - a Yankee visits the south, a Damn Yankee moves there. smile

lol

Yes im alive and well . I had a great time. I didnt really explore and wander off. I stayed in the touristy loction but when I did venture a little certain area didnt look as safe as it should be. " Floridas Poi's " was pretty good. And the Triple D's (diners drive-ins and dives) is a must have if your a food person like me and are willing to try new items. smile

Thanks for your concern.

Always take a map as a backup

Although this is an Old post this is my advice to anyone going on a trip. Always take a map as a backup to your GPS. You never know what is going to happen. On a trip a couple of years ago, I was fortunate to have a map in the glove box of my car. It was as a real life saver. Due to extreme weather that resulted in road closures my GPS was unless until I could find a route around the dilemma.
