What does it look like? My understanding is a mobile unit uses radar, whereas a permanent unit has the induction loops under the pavement.

These are LIDAR based. They look like a mobile generator with a tall pole sticking up. See:

Very cool video....well, at least now I know that even though it's portable, you will be able to see it after the fact. It's interesting that they openly disclose that in every case, their mobile unit showed test vehicles to be going 1-2 mph faster than they actually were (in vehicle radar + hand held laser matched in every case).

Seriously, who doesn't want something like this in their neighborhood, where their kids are playing? And imho to allow up to 11 mph over the limit before issuing a citation, that's reasonable. I personally do not like the 5 mph in DC, I think it's too close, minimum 6-7 should be allowed, 11 is just fine...

I don't

I guess you missed this part,

"The hours of operation for school zone enforcement is: 6:00am – 8:00pm, Monday – Friday."

This is what they plan to do for Chicago. I don't understand why I have to go 20 mph in a school zone, when school isn't even open at 7 pm at night. The current signs outside of schools say, "When children are present." Absolutely people should go 20 mph when students are present. That's when the school speed zone should be enforced. Beyond that, what is the point?

When laws are being changed for the sole purpose of charging people money, there is something seriously wrong.

Nobody says you have to go 20. At least in MD, you can go 31 and still not get a ticket. Do you want more than that? I don't get the reasoning, "I don't understand why I have to follow the law, just because there's technology that can enforce it."

For the sole purpose of charging people money? What would you consider your property tax?

What?

I never said, "I don't understand why I have to follow the law, just because there's technology that can enforce it." Nor did I imply it. For the record, I follow the laws. You're the one saying you can beat the system up until a certain threshold.

What I was trying to point out is, the school speed zones will be enforced when school children are not present. I have a problem with that. To me, it's the equivalent of ticketing people for rolling rights on red (not coming to a complete stop for 3 seconds), not stopping at precisely the correct location, etc. Enforcing a school speed zone from 6 am until 8 pm, is excessive. Enforce the speed zone when children are present, no more, no less. That would be fair.

it's your city

“It would still be enforced (after the school day was over),” says Mayor’s Office spokesperson Jennifer Martinez. “Remember there are extended school hours, summer programs, after school programs.”

Human nature is what it is. Does anybody shoplift anymore? I should think that only the desperate would, there is too much technology that ensures an arrest. I can tell you it wasn't the case in the 90's. Behavior behind the wheel is going to keep changing. Look at the DC petition where the guy got 4 $125 fines for speeding. imho he had a problem with the amount, not necessarily the fact that he sped and got caught.

Interesting how just like with stats, people cherry pick what facts to present. The context does matter.

Long before I was born, NYC had no right on red. I don't think for one second that anyone is arguing, it's 3 am, nobody is here except me, it really bugs me that I can't make a right on red. It's downright unconstitutional.

Windoze....

Saw the Windows system they are using. I was surprised at how detailed they explained their testing.

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info I will have to keep an eye out

You shouldn't be speeding there as you might drop your gyro from Marathon Deli. grin
