Real World Testing Nuvi 1100 LM

After some real world testing in the Fort Myers area of Florida with my new fully updated Garmin unit.

I have a few rants and raves about the operation of the Garmin device,I have previously owned and used the VZ navigator from Verizon Co.

Lets start with the rants, the audible voice commands for left turn and stay left are frequently wrong in metro areas when navigating below an overpass, in many cases it was a slight jog to the right while staying on the same roadway, I learned fast you must keep an eye on the pink highlighted road on the Garmin display or you will make a wrong turn every time.

I don't know if this is a problem with the new US lower 49 map data or not but many of interchange on/off ramps are not connected to the main roads, this caused errors of about 1.5 miles to get to the destination (hotel room). I will later supply some examples if anyone wants to dig deeper into the errors.

The unit should display the house number when getting close to the destination, many of my preloaded addresses had to be manually recalled to find the correct house number.(distracted driver problem)

At times I was told to proceed to the highlighted route and nothing was displayed on the Garmin, I found out you can zoom out till you can see it. (distracted driver problem).

POI alerts work great but not all require an audible alert like the Wi-Fi data base it goes off constantly in a metro area. Found the rest area POI data useful.

All in all I give the Garmin an 8 out of 10 rating and a big thumbs up for showing me a new route out of east Tenn. heading south toward Atlanta.

I guess I was expecting a bit more from a company that only deals in GPS navigation, having to look at the Garmin display to confirm the turn direction is very distracting.

Edit:The Chase ATM at 13059 University Drive Fort Myers Fl.33907 connects to Summerlin Road CR-869 before the overpass the garmin shows the road coming very close but not connected.

Brief comments

Did you update your firmware? I seem to recall an old version of the firmware having the issue with lefts and rights.

House number: it would be nice, however the way addresses are mapped it won't be accurate. On GPS receivers the addresses provided with the map data are evenly spaced on the road. This is why you still need to pay attention to your surroundings and cannot rely solely on the GPS.

No display when told to proceed to highlighted route: I haven't encountered this on my 1300 (an 1100 with a wide screen and spoken street names).

Just recieved a new firmware last night

I don't know what improvement are included in the latest firmware update, the unit reported it was up to date on the dashboard web page before I started the trip.

I am mostly pleased with the units operation but shocked that I had to manually look up the house numbers when approaching the destination, I mean really after all these years in the GPS business not to have important known information in plain site for the driver to act upon.

also the pink route line covers the icons for the built in factory POIs. I'm not the best programmer in the world but could easily fix the items mentioned if given the time and tools.

I was in Fort Myers last month and had much the same problems with turns. I think its a problem with the way the turns are done not so much the GPS. I found the turns, especially getting on the interstate, were not laid out very well on the road signs.

One of the limitations of

One of the limitations of having a device without TTS is that you get "arriving at your destination, on left" instead of "arriving at Denny's, on left". Neither version reads out the physical address, and to fix the map data so the addresses are accurate would put map updates even further behind than they already are. The amount of accuracy you seek, while doable, amounts to a lot of effort for little extra gain, thus not profitable to do.

As for the icons, they are part of the map data, and the route is drawn atop the map's layers. Fixing this is something that would require setting the pink route on the layer between POIs and road. It could be done, but again we're talking about a lot of effort for little gain.

The only exeption to this is if the Denny's is on an Extra POI file instead of the built in POI , in that case it will announce "Arriving at Denny's on left"

That isn't possible. The 1100 would then have to have a TTS engine to be able to speak the name "Denny's". It doesn't therefore it can't.

try it

If my obsolete 260 can do it why not the 1100? I'm talking about a loaded POI and not the built in the 1100

You are right, I wasn't aware the 1100 didn't have TTS

But as a Custom POI with a wav audio alert, it's possible, isn't it?

[Edit] You beat me by a minute, Fast-Fingered Flaco.

Context my friend. Context.

Context my friend. Context. The discussion wasn't about custom alerts, but the 1100's speech engine. Obviously, a custom alert could be set for Denny's, but that's getting away from my main point.

It's not a big deal since we're all agreed on the actual capabilities of that model nuvi.
