Dozens more speed cameras in Prince George's County Maryland

@baumback

Thanks for the links.

We'll cross check the new sites and keep on top of getting them into the camera files as they become active.

reasonable

I spent last week in DC/MD/VA, and I think I got nabbed by one in DC.

From what I've heard, DC allows for 5 mph over, and the fine is from $75 to $250. Someone told me MD allows for 11 mph over, and the fine at least when they got one was $40. One could say MD is reasonable.

What I can say is that driving has changed in DC compared to other places I've driven, there is a tendency to stop at red lights and not speed everywhere. So these cameras have in fact changed behavior. Anybody who says no, go down to DC and be a cowboy. Let's see if your pocketbook falls off that horse or not. smile

not accurate

JM, Thanks, I spent the last week down in the DC area, and my feeling is that the files are no longer accurate. Because the garmin went off so many times when I did not see any camera, it was impossible for me to make a note of all the places where the alert went off and pay attention to driving.

On the other hand, DC lists all the locations on their website.

I Live Near The Border

I live near the border of DC but in MD. The red light & speed cameras are proliferating at an amazing rate so that local governments can pay off the debts that they have run up.

I guess we'll have to live with it until the citizens stop electing officials who support these revenue generators.

I left there 27 years ago

I was born and raised in PG County ... but ... On one fine Friday afternoon back in 1985 it took me 4.5 hours to drive 24 miles to home. Nothing special going on just everyone sitting still in their cars. So I immediately found a new job and left town (Camp Springs). I have never looked back nor have I missed it.

Wow, traffic was much lighter in 1985 than it was last week. What is astounding about us is the HOV2 lane was moving at about 50 mph. The other 3 lanes were stopped. All of this with nearly $4 gasoline. No recession in DC at all, cranes are still putting up new condos and offices, quite a sight to see.

@johnnatash4

We'll go through the dc.gov list this week and make sure we're up-to-date.

Jonathan

directional

Jonathan

The problem johnnatash4 is seeing in DC maybe because the Garmin cameras are directionally triggered and the ones from POI-Factory are not, he may hear the POI alert go off but the camera may not be visible in his direction of travel

Growing up in Bowie was a great life. The race track, boys club sports. The Railroad Inn for pizza, J-Mart, Rips, the Goat Man .....

P. G. County, we hardly knew ye.

Washington Post Link is dead

"We're unable to locate the page you requested.
The page may have moved or may no longer be available."

But the amount of cameras they have seems to indicate it is a good profit-maker for them. Until they are challenged, they will keep doing it.

RLCs cross-checked

I cross checked all of the red light camera locations in DC, and we're up-to-date. Updates are included in the files I published today. I did take out a few, but also added a few.

They're seriously thick through the DC area...

Jonathan

That's Because

Jon -

That's because the DC, MD, & VA government budgets, like the Federal budget, is seriously overspent.

It's a good thing that the Federal Government hasn't yet figured out how to deploy & collect red light & speed camera fines (or share them with the States) from all over the country! We'd really be toast!

MD IS Going Bust

Yes, the Gov, M. O'Malley, is spending well over the state income, and he's passing state accrued costs to be paid by the county governments. That's at least in part why the new crop of speed and red light cameras here in MD. They're popping up on the Eastern Shore like weeds. Most are relocatable, so it'll be a real chore to keep any list up to date.

What We Need

What we need is a consistent approach to take with relocatable cameras. Do we have one now or do we change the location when they move the camera back & forth?

If we kept ALL their locations in a poi file as they start up & for some length of time afterward, we could review those changeable locations to see if they've stabilized. I, for one, would rather be notified, even OVER-notified, of a potential camera location. That way, while you are over warned, you are not likely to get ticketed.

Of course the dire financial situation in the People's Republic didn't prevent OweMalley's wife from getting a $14,500 bump in her salary as a judge.

They know they are cash

They know they are cash cows, expect to see lots more.

I live in the same area....

and the number of cameras seem to multiply weekly.
