no signal

MY garmin nuvi 50lm will not aquire a signal inside my vehicle. It works everywhere else. Any clues what the problem might be?

Heated windshield

I do remember reading that vehicles with heated windshields can cause interference because of the metallic content used in the film or whatever it is that is applied to make it heat up.

You don't have anything like that, do you?

Bummer

Bummer.

How strong a signal (how many bars show green) is it out of the car?

Are you in a city with lots of skyscrapers?

Where in your vehicle is the nuvi mounted?

If as expected under the windshield, does your vehicle's windshield have any internal wiring: antenna, heater, etc. that could be blocking the signals?

no signal

Maybe Lightsquared is doing some testing.

Easy Test

Try it in a different vehicle parked in the same proximity as yours, if it works you know it has something to do with your vehicles design causing inteference.

Wow works everywhere else?!

Sure wish my nuvi worked everywhere except in YOUR vehicle...DOH!!

Take it from inside the vehicle...

... to outside while it's still plugged in. Watch the signal levels. I do recall some Ford Crown Vics had that anodized windshield. They have this strange qold-blue hue in direct sunlight.

Try placing it up near your

Try placing it up near your rear-view mirror. You will get a better signal there.

OP, Update?

An update from the OP would be welcome. You seek help, you get suggestions, what's the result?

re: No Signal

What type of vehicle? Where do you try to use the GPS in the vehicle (dash versus center console or ___)? Any window tint or film?

UV blocking

UV blocking windshield will reduce the signal too. My wife's minivan has such a windshield. My old Quest locked on fine in my car but would not in her van.

Possible explanation

Some cars have so called metallized windshields. They cut sharply on any sort of radio wave. In short:

Windshields with metal particles can interfere with radio waves. Interior tollway transponders, dash-mount satellite radio receivers, and GPS receivers may become unreliable. In vehicles with metallized windshields, external transmitters and receivers may be required.

Heated windshields

Depending on the car, some windshields will not let the signal through.
E-Zpass window mount will not work on some cars. Yoo have to get a plate mount unit for it to read. Could be the same with GPS.
If you call E-Zpass you might get some information about the models it wont work on, that way you might find out if yours is on the list.
Then you at least have a starting point at what the problem might be.
Good Luck

No signal

Sorry all who answered my post. I forgot that I Asked a question. I placed my Garmin on the driver side window. It worked most of the time. Used it in my wife's car and it worked 100%.
