Just discovered this about Traffic Searches

is it me or do you guys find it odd that when we have a planned route, you can see where traffic is depending upon if the car icon on your screen is green, yellow, red, etc. But, in order to actually see where the traffic is, you have to take your eyes off the wheel and do a search to find out what is going on..

If you are just driving, and know where you are going, if there is local traffic you will get the warning on your home screen at the top of the unit. I was shocked to see that on my way home today I had the red traffic warning letting me know where the traffic flow had started..

Wouldn't it be more wise to have that warning show up on your screen when driving on a planned out route? Maybe I am wrong?

.

Both of mine show me the major routes around me on the map, and what's happening.

That said, it's handy to know if you have to make a detour to the store etc. on the way home, I suppose.

Traffic

@redsfan,
I'm not really quite sure what your saying but ...

The traffic icon will display anytime it is recieving the FM signal. Any time the traffic icon is visible you can tap it to switch to the traffic map. From the traffic screen you can see all of the traffic around you, you can Search the traffic around you and you can Avoid it.

When I am navigating a route the traffic icon shows me delays along my route but not on the side roads.

When I am just driving I don't think it shows me delay times but it will alert me when I am approaching traffic anywhere nearby. I think it tries to guess what roads you might be headed for.

In general, anytime you are approaching a traffic event you will receive a verbal alert, navigating or just driving. While navigating a long route you will see traffic delays sometimes an hour or 2 ahead on your route but you don't get a verbal until you are nearing it.

Just remember, what you are seeing is not real time information. It is delayed somewhat and more accurate in some cities than others.

One other thing to remember is that the receiver may lose reception for short periods of time and not be updating but the icon doesn't immediately turn gray letting you know this. When I leave work I have immediate traffic reception. Once I get to the bottom of the hill and get on the interstate I don't have reception for almost 20 minutes (mountains) along my route. The LED on the traffic power cable is red but the traffic icon remains green. Though you may not think about it when plugging in the power cable, rotate the cable so the LEDs are easily and quickly visible at a glance while driving.

Traffic Alert Details On Screen?

If you have a route, map changes as you approach problem. It would be nice if it did have some sort of earlier warning, maybe in a text box, to give details but in heavy traffic areas, that could be a problem also. Probably tradeoffs they have considered.

Bridge Closure Alert

My nuvi 2460LMT alerted to a bridge closure in Tampa and automatically re-routed while underway.

Great feature.

Though the map doesn't change to the traffic map for distant traffic the icon does. The icon changes to red or yellow for traffic up to an hour away. Then you can tap the icon and see what is ahead.

Time estimation

I notice traffic ahead by the estimated time or arrival - it changes with traffic. Of course, the unit should be able to receive traffic info first and that does take a minute or two after turning on the antenna thingy

great explanations on here,

great explanations on here, thanks guys...I see that some are saying that either Navigating or on a Route the unit would alert me visually/verbally as to what is going on. What I found this week was that on a planned route I was approaching red light traffic but I had to go into the traffic option to see where it was. My unit rebooted for some reason and came back on it was no longer on my route it was just navigating. It was at that time it game me the traffic delay without having to go into the traffic option..it is possible it guessed my route as it is a common one for me..
