Garmin-computer interface issues

I'm relatively new to GPS with a 2-month old Nuvi 680. Two questions: (1) gstart will not recognize the 680 on either my PC or laptop through the USB port (the computer recognizes the SD card, though); and (2) webupdater (which recognizes the 680)did not seem to know that there was a Mapsource update, so I downloaded the update as some suggested in their posts but, when trying to install it, was informed that I have no Mapsource products installed.

This newbie would appreciate any advice on either of these two issues.

Thanks.

1) I'm fairly sure that you

1) I'm fairly sure that you don't need gStart with Garmin models that operate in Mass Storage Mode. So my question is, what are you trying to do with gStart?

2) Webupdater is for firmware updates on your GPSr. It does do anything with MapSource. You need to check for and install those udpates separately. So, the question is do you already have the MapSource software installed on your computer?

X2 with what she said. My

X2 with what she said. My gstart doesn't work either, but I don't care cause you really don't need it.

Yeah, like MCM said, mapsource has nothing to do with your GPRr directly nor the webupdater.

Mapsource is not included with units that have the maps preinstalled, however many of us have obtained the software direct from Garmin technical help at no charge. For more information on Mapsource, do a search on this site.
The Mapsource update that is available online will only update a copy that you already have.

If you have Windows, try right-clicking on MY COMPUTER, choose MANAGE, then go to DISK MANAGEMENT, wait until the data populates, look to see if there is an unfamiliar device listed. Right click on it and assign it a different drive letter.
Possible it may be in conflict with another drive letter assignment.
