You will need to load part of the maps to the unit and the rest (if desired) to a memory card.

Phew some fast reply !!!!!!!!!. Many thanks. I am a vergin, how?.

Voices and languages

You could delete unused voices and languages to free up more space also.

Make a Backup of your unit. first then proceed

This is how I did it last time.

Start with a clean SD card in your computer or SD card reader. Make sure it is formatted FAT32. Create the \Garmin folder. Connect your nuvi to the computer in data mode and copy file GarminDevice.xml from the \Garmin folder on the nuvi into the \Garmin folder on the SD card.
On myGarmin, click on the myMaps tab, select the map download link and use option 2 (Map update installer). Proceed to download and install the map files to computer only. Wait until update is complete.
Boot up the nuvi and disable the currently installed CN NA and 3D maps (tools > settings > map > map info, uncheck CN North America and CN North America 3D if present). Reboot and verify that you only have basemap support (major roads only).
Connect the nuvi to the PC in data mode and delete the following files from the \Garmin folder on the nuvi internal drive: gmapprom.img, gmapprom.gma, and gmapprom.unl. Copy the empty JCV folder to the SD card.
Use Map Installer to load the map update to the SD card. When complete, copy the new map to the Nuvi.
Disconnect the Nuvi and boot up. Confirm new map is installed. Re connect the Nuvi.
Download the large JCV file (D3060030A)to the computer. Then copy the JCV file to the SD card Garmin/JCV folder.

Do a search on "Deleting

Do a search on "Deleting Language Files" without the quotation marks and look for help on deleting unwanted files and languages. The greatest space saver is getting rid of the help files in languages you don't need.

Yep

@dodo

Remember that these units sell all over the world, having said that, they there fore have a ton of languages on board. Dump what you don't want, including the help files and eula stuff. You only speak English, you keep only English. Frees up tons.

Full NA map on my 1490lmt

After deleting all help & voice file that were not English & French, I was able to download the latest full NA map on my 1490lmt. I also deleted the supplied smaller jcv file (about 55MB)and loaded the larger jcv file (757MB), JPEG's and all my custom POI's onto my SD card. I now have 109MB free after the map update.

Are we there yet?

Don't delete anything...

Put the new map on the SD card and change it to the source.

Does using the memory card

slow the unit processing time? Will it recalculate routes faster without memory card on-board?

Process times

I have not noticed increased processing times with the maps on my SD card. Boot up time is affected though.

I disagree with "The greatest space saver is getting rid of the help files"
My help files are 6.22 MB, the language files are 412 MB.

Voice files

Hi dodo!
First thing to do is hook up the GPS with the USB cable to the computer.
Next open "the computer files"
when you see the GPS come up as a drive click on it.
You will then see a "Garmin" file folder"
Click on it.
One of the files will say "voice"
Double click on it.
There will be a list of all the languages on the GPS.
Just click on the languages you don't need and delete them.
Languages take up a lot of room on the unit.
If when yo see the GPS when you first open "my computer" and hi-lite it and hit properties you will see all the free space left.
After you delet the languages you don't need, do it again and you will all the room you have gained.
As always said here "backup everything first in case you need it.
Good Luck

Garmin Nuvi 260W Garmin Nuvi 1490T If you think knowledge is expensive, try ignorance.

Deleting un-necessary files

I have the 1450 and the first few updates indicated no memory shortages. Then out of the blue not enough memory for all of North America so I downloaded the USA only. I then discovered that the downloader was not using my extra memory card! The next update the downloader offered the choice of using the SD card and I was able to update to all of North America again and my SD card was now in use Go Figure?

If you only download only

If you only download only the region of maps where you are living, you will have ample space for everything else.
