Satellite Photos on GPS

Does anyone know if I can put Google Earth satellite images on my Garmin nuvi? I would like to look at a moving map of actual city images to help find good shopping places.

thx,
Jen

No you can't currently do

No you can't currently do that. I think there are some Pocket PC software applications that are capable of doing this.

Static images?

You can associate static JPEGs (obtained from Google Earth or elsewhere), with pre-defined POI's - though that might not be what you have in mind.

Actually, I'm intrigued - how would you spot a good shopping place from an aerial photo? smile)

Darn good eyes

You have to have REALLY good vision smile I too am curious Jen!

I think it would look sweet

I think it would look sweet when cruising down the highway though

Distraction?

Wouldn't it be a bit distractive while driving? Though, informative.

Shopping From the Air

You're right that shopping centers may look like office buildings from the air. But my GPS tells me exactly where shopping centers are. Good shopping centers have lots of cars in the parking lot.

You certainly can download

You certainly can download ANY map and use it on the Nuvis, but it is a HUGE amount of work. Also the map would not be routable. As an example look at the work to make a topo map from the government data.

See http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm

So yes really you could ...is it practical? only for a small area. There would also be a legal issue if you took satellite maps off of Google or another.

Sounds like a business someone could start?

GPS with moving aerial images

I just learned that there is a hand held GPS with moving aerial images. It's mostly for cambers and outdoors people.

Jen

TomTom 910 has this feature

TomTom 910 has this feature but only limited to aerial viewing and not the 3D version Google has running on their site.

Just zoom out on a POI or

Just zoom out on a POI or anywhere else on the map and it will go into the satellite imagery. Make sure you have the "satellite" option checked and downloaded when connected to you computer and save that option for your 910

Coming in the future

Currently the Nuvi cannot do this. I see it as a thing that will be coming in the future. It will require alot of memory for sure to hold the photo data.

Thanks for the info .I am going to try this

tiny images

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the static Jpegs really just that tiny little box in the corner?

tiny images

As far as I know, that's what they are.

I think Harvey anytime we look off the road that is a distraction, speed, radio, etc. We all just use a little common sence just don't watch it like a tv.
