The Problem With Android

OS fragmentation

OS fragmentation exists for every phone OS, whether it be Windows Mobile, iOS, or Android.

My opinion is that the fragmentation issue is equivalent to making a mountain out of a molehill. Joe Average isn't going to care whether the OS is current or not. All he's going to care about is whether he can play Angry Birds on it.

It's the tech savvy crowd that give a damn about this, and even then some of them don't.

The only thing I care about is does the phone do what I want it to do without making me work at it. All the rest is BS for forum discussions.

There really isn't a problem, that doesn't exsist in all phones

No need to go any farther than the comments within the link you provided above. They say it all.

Appleholic's don't want to admit that the sacred Iphone is losing ground to the Android OS. And the newest phone the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is designed to be ’100% Free’ of Apple Patents. Apple can only wish the Iphone was 100% free of others Patents.

Apple isn't any better

They just have slick marketing to make you think so.

Not in the phone arena, but I bought a ipod classic 160GB less than a year before the line was upgraded to a maximum of 120GB. As the new ipod features are rolled out, do you think there was an update for my ipod? Of course not, they want me to pony up and pay for a new one.

Now the android OS is being badmouthed because there are not updates forthcoming for all the old hardware out there?

I have a minature notebook PC with 16MB RAM and a 90MHz Pentium processor. When am I going to get a update from Win95 to WinXp, or Win7?

Why does the android get bad press for this while Apple and Microsoft are given a free pass?

Just to let you know, I love

@WJTHomas: Just to let you know, I love my Toshiba Libretto too. I'll love it even more if I ever get around to replacing its CMOS battery. smile

The reason IMHO is "Android" is always be toted as being better then everyone else. We get told that it will not have the pitfalls of any other OS. Microsoft and Apple have been around long enough that everyone expects it from them.

Nothing against Android, Blackberry, Apple, or Windows. I own and use each everyday.

I like Windows for it's simplicity and it is what I learned on.

Blackberry is the first "smart phone" I used. Bought it since it was geared more towards business which is what it was for, not games. Came with software for both Apple and Windows sync.

I use an Apple laptop and Ipad 2 for my every day work. The laptop also dual boots into windows for some work software that is proprietary to my job.

The company just got us Android phone for work. Overall it works fairly good. I do have to pull the battery about every 2 weeks to do a reset. Seems to get to a point that I change screen and it has to reboot. Battery pull fixes this and yes it is up to date on the loaded firmware.

I have not read the above posted article but I usually clean the cache on all of my devices every 2-3 weeks anyway. Seems to keep everything run smoother.

my biggest issue with android

Are the permissions some apps require. Its BS.

LBE Privacy Guard

My friend, if you are rooted, download LBE Privacy Guard from the market and allow or deny apps specific privileges. For example, most apps request the ability to look up the phone's IMEI or IMSI number. With LBE Privacy Guard, I can deny that request to every single app without affecting my ability to use the app.

While effective by itself, pairing LBE with Droidwall really allows you to lock things down.

At least Android asks, with the Iphone all permissions are set ON by default, and you don't even know what hit you. Iphone users can edit the default setting, but must still accept the permission to use the app.

Root your phone, to get around some of the permissions.

Fragment market

I forgot to mention, the DOS (and now Windows) PC market suffers from this same fragmentation, and that is why is it much larger and more successful than the non-fragmented sole source Apple market.

Apple tries to counter this with the claim that Apple products are more secure from viruses. It comes down to basic economics, the Apple market is not large enough to attract the vile miscreants that produce the viruses. If Apple ever increases their market share, they will suffer from virus attacks.

The Andriod market will continue to expand and fragment itself and in the process become much muhc larger than the iPhone, IMHO

Rooting

Yea, I have to root it still. Just had the phone for 5 days and then off to work up north again. I was going to root with cyanogen.

I'll have to ask some advice from you guys!

I just got a new iPhone 4S

I just got a new iPhone 4S with Siri.

Too bad the iPhone 4 will never get Siri. Fragmentation - it's with every platform, and just as bad on iOS.
