same destination different route different garmin

In May of this year I was going to Upstate New York with my sister from Long Island she was using her new nuvi Gps and I also turn my old garmin C550. She had the 2011 map I had the 2010 map on mine .same direction same road.but about 50 miles before the destination her gps telling her to go straight, mine to make right turn and going to a different route.keep in mind she had always going the same way her Gps was telling her.for me was the first time.Well she decide to follow the direction of my gps the distance was shorter and she arrived 20 minutes early that her gps was telling her.

Is anyone have any idea how this could be?

Different algorithms in the

Different algorithms in the maps or possibly the way you have the avoidance's set. Look for shortest vs quickest.

forgot to mention

Both GPS are set as the quickest route

Possibilities

What is her GPS model and features? Does it have Traffic? With Traffic, a true or perceived snarl-up ahead on one route may cause it to switch to a different route.

Are both set for the same preferred routing; e.g., Fastest Route, Shortest Route, Most Economical Route, etc?

Are the two GPSes set up with identical Avoidances? Having one set to avoid Tolls, Unpaved Roads, etc. may offer widely different routing.

Other than that, the map version and GPSs' routing engine may be the cause. All are just guesses.

Turn off TrafficTrends and myTrends. I have a couple of nuvis and have done a few comparisons with TrafficTrends and myTrends and there is a big difference. Both are useless features.

Different Routes

When going from my friends house in Washington, to my place in Idaho my nuvi 650 sent me on several rural highways. Going back the same unit sent me a different way on the interstate. I figured it was because starting in WA I was on a rural hwy, but starting in ID I was on the Interstate.

So your

So your saying that these are useless yet if the OP had them turned on and they caused the route difference between the 2 units he just saved himself 20 minutes of travel time - "Well she decide to follow the direction of my gps the distance was shorter and she arrived 20 minutes early that her gps was telling her". question

In any event, comparing the routes on 2 completely different units, using 2 different map versions, and who knows how many other settings differences, would all factor in on why the 2 units produced different routes to the same location.

I'm Curious

I wonder what would happen if she changed it to shortest distance; would she get your route?

Another to add to the fray is, roads can be reclassified. Where I live, Harvey Ave. is technically a highway, but the route is only 60 kmh. I've seen many roads like this that can factor in calculations.
