POI

When I go to the Custom POI and click on the GPX to download and open the poi, I get a msg that "window can't open the file". This doesn't happen with a CSU POI. Why is this happening.

gpx and windows

Sounds like your Windows does not have any software associated with gpx files in its Registered file types, but does have a particular software associated with csv files ( most likely Excel or another spreadsheet.)

If you want to open gpx files you need to install software such as EPE to properly read and edit them.

You could associate simple text editors such as notepad with gpx files but it would be difficult for many people to deal with gpx format properly that way.

What is EPE

I know this is an abreviation for a program, but what does it stand for, and where can I get it?

Extra POI Editor

Great program and free.

just download it

You really want to just download the file, you don't want to open it in the download process anyway. If you feel the need to "open" it with something, just associate it with an editor like notepad. You'll use it by using it as input for POIloader, but since loading a POI erases other current POIs it is not a good idea to associate the extension with POIloader.

Additional Instructions

As Frovingslosh has indicated, you first need to download a POI file to some folder on your computer. Most of us use some folder that is a sub-folder to one called MyPOIs.

Let's say that one is downloading the Cracker Barrel GPX POI file. We would download to a folder called Cracker Barrel that was a sub-folder to our MyPOIs file. The full path might look something like
C:\MyPOIs\Creacker Barrel

Once you have downloaded the file, navigate to its folder and right-click on the file. a dialog box should open. One of the choices will be "Open With". Left-click on "Open With" to see what is available for you to use. If you do not see the program that you want, then left-click on the "Choose Program" option. Perhaps you will find a program here that you can use but if you want EPE then you are going to navigate to wherever the "Extra_POI_Editor.exe" file is located and choose it. Then left-click on the "open" option. If you wish, you could always use EPE to open a .gpx file by checking the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box.

Older versions of POILoader always "replaced" the file it normally created (named "poi.gpi"). However, the latest version of POILoader lets you choose the name of the .gpi file that it creates.

I will go further and suggest that you do not associate POILoader with any file. Rather, I would have a shortcut on the desktop to fire up POILoader.
