OEM's POI's vs Custom POI's

I just purchased the Garmin 1390LMT and when I look up a Costco, Walmart, Fry's etc. I get a myriad of choices sorted by distance. What is the advantage or how should I use the Custom POI's for the same companies?

POI databases on this site tend to be more up to date & accurate

You will sometimes find that either a very new location will not show up in the built in database or a closed location will still show up.

The custom POI databases on this site tend to be more up to date and accurate.

Not just new ones...

A was looking for a Friendly's and a Toys'r'us in a small town in the US. The GPS reported one 49 miles away and the other one much further. I just turned back the there they were.

There are a lot of POIs missing on the Garmin units. At POI-Factory, you have much more chances to get the full list.

Missing and no one knows why

There seem to be many missing locations and no one knows why. The Subaru dealership in my town (which has been there for many years) is not in the Garmin internal database,

We cannot ask Garmin because they purchase the data from a third party,

6 million is a tiny number

6 million POI's is a tiny, tiny fraction of the actual possible list of all businesses and attractions available. The data service obviously has to choose a small selection of each category. How they make that selection is not known. Random, I guess. I know a couple shopkeepers in my area that are listed in my Nuvi and they did not pay anything to advertise via GPS, so they aren't paid entries. Seems like it might make sense to a business to have such a service, though. I think if I had a retail business, I would be as likely to pay a small fee to get my store accurately in the list with a brief description, same as I would pay to be in the Yellow Pages.

OEM POI's are limited

Custom POI's are so much better and are far more current and up-to-date than the ones that come on the GPS when you purchase it.

Updating POIs

My former bank was purchased by another bank and all branches were renamed in June 2010. So far, no updated names on the Garmin database. God help the new bank customer who doesn't know about the old name.

And no, I do not volunteer to create a POI file.

The GM factory nav in my car has 12 million built-in POI's

The GM factory nav in my car with 2011 maps has 12 million built-in POI's included and is more complete and up to date than my Garmin that has the latest 2012.20 map database with 6 million POI's.

I have no idea where the POI database supplier gets there list from but the quality and accuracy appears to vary.
