POI Loader for Windows software version 2.7.0 was just released by Garmin
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=927
Just downloaded the gpx file..
as it was on poi factory. Have no idea why but the file in question was the file causing the problem. As soon as it was taken out no more problems. I believe there was an update so maybe the last update was corrupted and when I downloaded the newer file the problem with the file was gone.
POI Loader for Windows software version 2.7.0 Released
Doesn't even run for me. I get an error message that says: "This is an unsupported OS version. This application requires Windows XP SP2 or greater."
I'm on Vista SP2. Huh?
Well, that's the problem

This application requires Windows XP SP2 or greater. Vista doesn't meet the qualifications.
Seriously, do a search for version 2.6.1. It works much better without the naming bug.

Garmin Poiloader Error
Every time I ran Garmin's Poiloader 2.70 program I kept getting the error message "There is an unexpected error during the creation of the custom poi file"
I follow the advice of other users on this forum and narrowed it down to one GPX file named JerseyMikes.GPX. Once i removed that file the POILOADER program worked find. I'll notify the file owner so they can revisit the file and check it.
File runs fine

The Jersey Mike's file runs fine on my unit. Are you certain you have the January 2012 version? (I use POI Loader 2.6.1 which doesn't have the bug 2.7.0 has.)

I just downloaded JerseyMikes.GPX and tried to compile it with POILoader v2.7.0 and also got the error that gadget_man got. I have been using v2.7.0 since it was released and don't have any other problems with my other CSV or GPX files. I'll tinker with it and see if I can find what is going on.

Please read my explanation
Please read my explanation in my email. I can load other GPX files from this website with Garmin's Poiloader 2.70 with no problems but I can't load the jerseymikes's file that you have created. I don't know what the difference is between your GPX file and others but I am making you and others aware that your file might not work if you try to load it with Garmin's latest POIloader V2.70. I'm bringing this up cause this website is about notifying others of problems, new features, and solutions. Hope that helps.

@Box Car,
Here is the bad record in the file. Somehow the LON ended up with a 6. in front of it.

Thank You for the update!
Thank You for the update!
What I could see is the new
What I could see is the new 2.7 added a new line "choose a name for the newly created file".
When I selected "computer" the next item I was greeted with was, "Please select a folder for saving you POI file" Next was "Please select a folder where your data files can be found" What it displays to right of this is the current name of the folder where your data files reside. example; if your folder is named 'mypoi files' then the resulted file name created will be "mypoi files.gpi" Before, all the files were created were just POI.gpi. This is how it is working using XP anyway. The folder where my files are is named"POI" so my .gpi file is named POI.gpi
This is the change I noticed anyway. Thanks
Folders
I maintain about 6 different GPSs and everyone has slightly different interests. I have my POIs broken down into about 20 different folders that I compile to the computer individually and then I just drag and drop the updates to each whenever I have them connected to the PC.
The disadvantage is that I have to compile many different folders individually, some with alerts, the others without.
The advantage is that if you start with an empty POI folder on the GPS or SD card you can drag and drop the different POI files in the order you want them to display on the GPS. Once this is done any updates (copy and replace) only update the POI but don't change the order. Its more work but I like controlling the order of the files. I don't like scrolling through multiple pages to get to a file I use regularly, like Rest Stops.
An Example of different folders I have. Different people get different folders like my daughter doesn't get Wineries, Hotels, work stores, coffee, etc. My wife definitely gets the HD Dealers TourGuide in case she wants to buy me something, along witha few other files
Rest Areas Combined
Coffee
Food
HD Dealers TourGuide (2 mile)
Hotels
Red Light and Speed Cameras
Scenic Routes
Wineries
Stores
Work Stores
Banks
Massage Envy

and if you make them into GPX

If you convert all the CSV to GPX you can build the alert distance into the file so they all load in AUTO mode. Use EPE to read the CSV in, press CTL-R then P five times. EPE now asks for the proximity distance. Key in the value in either feet or meters and save as GPX.

POI file order

I currently set my proximity distance with EPE in the HD Dealers TourGuide and 1 other. What is more important to me is the order that the files appear in under Custom POI on the GPS. I use the Rest Area Combined file quite a bit while traveling so I want it to display first in the Custom POI list. I never lookup Red Light or Speed cameras since I use them only for the alerts so I have it loaded so it is very last in the display order. I have my food files display before hotels, etc. I load my wife and daughter's 765Ts with a slightly different combination of POI files and display order. I load my riding friend's GPSs with RestAreas Combined, food, hotels and POI files that we'll be using on our trips and local rides.
If you lump everything under 1 folder and compile them at one time you get all of the files in the alphabetical order of the folders and files. Plus, as I said, I don't put all files on every GPS. So since they are compiled separately by category folders I just drag and drop the needed categories for each individual GPS, in the order I want them to display.
With me its all about different files for different folks and the display order.
