ROUTING

I have an 855 and a 3790LMT. Doing a simulation drive, I find that the routing is different between the two. The 855 will keep me on a toll road until it let me know to exit, which is the way I want to go. The 3790LMT takes me on a toll road and exit to a frontage road and than back on to another toll road, which is not the way I want to go. Checked everything on the 3790LMT and all is checked right. I don't have void toll road checked. Has anyone had this problem.

On the 3790...

Is the preference set for shortest, or fastest? How 'bout the 855? Make sure they're the same preference and see if the oddity persists... if it does, it may just be their routing engines in the two models are different.

Bottom line with either one - If something is obviously stupid and wrong, go the way you want to go, and it will eventually catch up with you.

Is the frontage road shorter?

I have seen similar things on my 255W. Is the route on the frontage road shorter, even if only a small amount?

I find Garmin underestimates how much slower dirt roads or secondary roads are compared to a highway or freeway, and sometimes chooses a shorter but slower route, even if faster time is selected in route preferences.

Map Versions

Do both units have the same map versions? It is possible small changes in the mapping software could cause different routing.

My 1490T does the same thing>>>

Garmin could not care less.

"You can't get there from here"

I just live with it. Around

I just live with it. I have stories of it both working and not working.

Around here there's the Mass Pike that runs parallel to route 9, which has a lot of lights on it. My old 350 used to try to take me on 9 on my commute home, so I ignored it. The 3760 realizes that it's slow (due to trafficTrends) during the day, but if I'm driving there at 1 am it will take route 9 which actually is shorter and saves a few minutes if it's all clear.

On the flip side, I was on Cape Cod last month, and at an intersection of two highways, it wanted me to get off onto a residential road for a few blocks and then get back on the same highway. This was obviously wrong, so I just ignore it.

Sometimes I don't notice. Every once in a while I'll be taken on an entertaining side-trip on strange back roads somewhere. I just enjoy the scenery. More often than not, the time actually is shorter this way.

Just ignore it if you know better...

TrafficTrends or MyTrends?

It could be one of the new routing features (TrafficTrends or MyTrends) causing a difference in routing. If you have these features turned on in your 3790, you could try turning them off.

The avoid traffic option could be turned on. (I believe that is different then TrafficTrends or MyTrends)

That did it. Disable both Traffic Trends and MyTrend and did a simulation route and it did the job. Routed me the way I wanted to go.

Thanks a lot alandb

TrafficTrends.

Yeah, I don't have one of the new units that supports TrafficTrends, but from what I have read in the forums from other users, it seems that Garmin has a long way to go to make it a useful feature.

Don't have any trouble with my 3790 and myTrend's but trafficTrends causes all kinds of crazy stuff, including sometimes taking a very long time to calculate a route, particularly when using Prompted as the Calculation Mode.
