Mapsource Detaching Pictures from Nuvi 1450

When I download from Mapsource I find that all my POI pictures have been detached. Is there anyway to keep them attached after downloading.

.

Your "pictures have been detached"? What does that mean?

If you want Custom Icons for your Custom POIs, you need to use POI Loader.

You can't load Custom Icons for your Favorites from MapSource.

"pictures have been detached"?

The pictures are attached to my favorites "NOT" my Custom POIs. I have attached them in the Nuvi 1450 and I have also input the picture location in the Waypoint Properties in Mapsource. There is a spot at the bottom of the properties that allows you to do this. I have added the pictures to the card that I use to expand the memory of Nuvi. When you look at your favorites they are located beside the name of the POI that I have saved.

Linking does not attach and Vice Versa

The way I understand it, the Attach Photo feature on the Garmin is completely unrelated to the File/URL link feature in Mapsource.

If you use the Attach Photo feature on your garmin so that a picture (that is stored on your garmin) shows along with the name of a Favorite, a link to the picture will not appear in the File/URL link box in the properties of the waypoint when it is transferred to Mapsource from the garmin.

Conversely if you put a link to a picture in the File/URL link box of a waypoint property in Mapsourse, that link will not be transferred to the garmin along with the transfer of a waypoint (even if the link points to a picture on the garmin's main storage or a SD card in the garmin).

In other words, the picture(s) that the Mapsource waypoint properties File/URL link box points to can only be viewed within Mapsource.

Linking does not attach and Vice Versa

OK, I get that but why when you download waypoints and routes from Mapsource the pictures become unlinked from the favorite POIs on the Nuvi 1450 GPS.

I think you missed the main point.

The link feature in Mapsource is not intended to make pictures available on your Garmin. It is ONLY for linking to items that are to be viewed in Mapsource.

It goes far beyond pictures. You can link to a video, pdf files, Excel spread sheet, text documents etc. on your computer and on the internet. You could even link to things like a you tube video.

Also you can put links to several items in the same link box, for example: 5 pictures, 3 Excel spread sheets. 2 You Tube Videos, and a pdf file containing your tax return. How would your Garmin determine which one of the items it should display along with the name of a Favorite?

Note that a link is just a pointer - it points to where the item is located and does not transfer anything to the computer or to the Garmin. The link has to be followed each time the item is to be viewed.

Your Garmin is not able to follow the links to those items when it is not connected to your computer. Also the Garmin would not be able to display many of the items even if it could link to it.

Missing the point?

I probably am missing the point but, why does Mapsource keep unlinking the pictures in my Nuvi 1450 that are attached to the Favorites. I have to keep linking the pictures to the Waypoints every time I download to the Nuvi 1450. When I download from the Nuvi to Mapsource the picture linking is untouched.

Please clarify

Help us understand what is happening.

From time to time - after I have navigated to some location - I save that location under "favorites" (Mapsource is not involved). If I want to "edit" a favorite, I can change the name of that favorite, change the map symbol, enter a phone number, give it a category as well as attach a Photo.

I assume that have done the same (not involving Mapsource) and have attached a photo. I hear you saying, however, that when you subsequently use Mapsource, any photos you attached to a GPS only created "favorite" are detached.

Did I understand that correctly?

1490 and Mapsource

I understand the problem the OP is having. When transferring favorites to Mapsource, the file number of the photo appears in the waypoint property. That is just the name of the file but the file itself is not transferred at all. Meanwhile, the actual photo is still on the Nuvi and must be attached to the favorite if that favorite has been deleted, then reloaded. The work around is just to leave those favorites on the Nuvi all the time.
EDIT: In the waypoint properties box, I added this link. http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q297/spokybob/IMG_2733Tro...
When I transferred the Mapsource favorites to my Nuvi, that pic did not transfer.

re:Please clarify

Yes that is correct. If I don't use Mapsource the pictures stay linked to the Save Favorites. I like to build my routes on Mapsource and then download them to my Nuvi 1450. I have noticed that when I do that all of the pictures that where linked become unlinked.

re:1490 and Mapsource

That is partially the problem. If I leave the waypoint on the Nuvi and it has a picture linked to it, I find that if I download anything from Mapsource, that photo is unlinked from the waypoint. All the pictures of any waypoint is unlinked no matter what I download from Mapsource.

Photos do install with POI Loader

If you want photos with Waypoints, go ahead and use the file/URL field of the Waypoints in MapSource to point to photos in the same folder as you store the MapSource gpx file. Note, you must save it as a gpx file, not a gdb file. POI Loader will then include your jpg photos with the Custom POIs. It is a good idea to convert your jpg files to the resolution of your GPS, otherwise your Custom POI files can get very large. Free Photo Converter from CNet is a nice batch conversion program to do that.

As for MapSource clobbering the link to a photo for Favorites unrelated to the Waypoints you are sending to the device, that is puzzling. I've still got the Garmin POI in my Favorites that includes a photo of the building in Olathe,KS and that photo is still linked, regardless of how many times I've reloaded my other Favorites.

One step at a time.

I used a blank MapSource file. I created two favorites and entered the file names of the pics in the box. I then saved the Mapsource file as a GPX file in a new folder where the pics are located. Then I connected my 1490 & I clicked on "send to device."
Next I disconnected the 1490 and booted up. When I tap on where to> favorites, the favorites are there and the pictures are on the 1490, but not linked to the favorite. At this point I have to edit each favorite and attach the photo.
....NOW.. You mentioned the "POI LOADER" and custom poi. That is not what we are trying to do. We are using Mapsource and favorites, not custom POI

Link vs attach

That is an expected result because as I said, the Attach feature in the Garmin is not related to the Link feature in Mapsource.

I take it that that the photos were already on your Garmin because the Link feature in Mapsource will not cause any files (photos, text or whatever) to be transferred to the Garmin.

Note that even if the photo is already on the Garmin and you list a link to that photo in the waypoint property Link box in Mapsource, that link is not avaliable to the Garmin when you disconnect it from your computer. The path to the photo on your Garmin shown by the link starts at a drive on your computer and that drive and path only exists while your Garmin is connected to your computer.

That is why you still have to use the Attach feature to associate the picture on the Garmin with a Favorite that has been sent to your Garmin via Mapsource.

Also note that if you want to view the picture in Mapsource via the "Open link" button in the waypoint properties, the Garmin has to be connected to your comuter.

Not true.

This is the link in my Mapsource file.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures\bowker\IMG_6970.JPG

When I click the little yellow arrow in waypoint properties, the pic opens with MS Office Picture Manager.
It has nothing to do with my 1490 at this point.

This is the results I get:

Then the photos must have been also on your garmin to start with. Or at least that is the way it works with Mapsource and my 285W.

I tried to do it like you said:

Opened a blank Mapsource file.

Created a waypoint.

Linked to a jpg file:
C:\DocumentsandSettings\Evert\MyDocuments\MyPictures\President Statue.jpg

Saved the Mapsource file as C:\DocumentsandSettings\Evert\MyDocuments\MyPictures\Waypoint with President Statue picture.gpx

With my 285W connected to my computer, I clicked on the Mapsource menu item "Transfer" then clicked on "Send to device", put a check mark by "Waypoints", and clicked on "Send".

When I disconnected my 285W, and it started up in regular operating mode, the waypoint from Mapsource showed up as a Favorite but there was no "President Statue" picture to be found anywhere on my Garmin.

I have not found any way to get Mapsource to send a picture to my Garmins. That is why I assumed that your Mapsource link was pointing to a picture already stored on your Garmin.

BTW: I do not see how saving the Mapsource file as a gpx file in the folder along with the picture has anything to do with the transfer of the waypoint to the Garmin via the Mapsource waypoint transfer function.

No can do.

I agree... I was hoping we could find a way to help the OP...I copy & paste my pics from the pc directly to the SD card. When I link those pics to favorites, I found that it copies them to the Garmin memory instead of just pointing to them. When I click tools> picture viewer, I see duplicates.
..I understand what the OP was trying to do. I like loading up the Florida poi to my favorites just before the trip. Then it is easy to add additional places while on vacation. And then transfer all the favorites back to Mapsource until next year.

Duplicates

.....

I do not get the same results on my 285W (or 255W).

When I ATTACH a picture that is stored on the Garmin to a Favorite using the Garmin's Attach Photo feature in the edit Favorite screen, it does not create a duplicate picture in the picture viewer. The process just causes a reduced copy of the picture to be displayed beside the Favorite's name.

If you have duplicates they must have been there before you used the Attach feature in the Garmin.

Note that pictures do not have to be in the garmin\jpg folder, they will show up in Picture Viewer no matter where they are on the garmin or it's SD card.

Evert

Are you loading your pics on the SD card or on the Garmin? I load mine on the card.

Both

I switch around depending on what pictures I want to view in my Garmin.

I keep a few directly on the Garmin. These I want to have avaliable all the time, mainly ones I want to select for my splash screen. I cycle through them using different ones periodically.

I have pictures on more than one SD card and I put in the card that has pictures that I want to to be able to view via my Garmin at a particular time.

Problem somewhat solved

I loaded my favorites in "Extra POI Editor" and linked the pictures with them. I then save the files as a .gpx and loaded them with the "POI Loader" as custom POIs. I now see them in Custom POIs and they have the picture linked with them. I have to still have them in my favorites so that I can create a route in Mapsource and download the route to my Nuvi 1450. When I do download from Mapsource the Custom POIs with pictures remain untouched.

I would like to thank everyone who inputed their thoughs on this subject.

Thanks Kojaq

I used the method you described. When I tap GOTO>Extras, the custom poi appears. Tap PRESS FOR MORE,and the thumbnail pic appears. Tap the pic and it appears on full screen. Sweet.
There are no pics in the PHOTO VIEWER using this method.
