newbie adding pois

Have a garmin 1450lmt.

Do I have to match an icon with each file? Can I merge say all the starbucks, dunkin donuts, and jim hortons into one file and just have a coffee icon? If so, how and in what program would you do that?

Can ya tell I'm new to this?

You have several options, it just depends on how you want it to display. You don't have to have an icon for every file, some of my POIs do and some don't. If you do want an icon, it needs to be named the same as the POI and be in the same folder when loading.

For example:

Tim Hortons.csv
Tim Hortons.bmp

If you want several POIs to have the same icon, you could copy and paste the icon file into the same folder, and then rename it to match the other POIs.

I would take the Tim Hortons.bmp file, and make a few copies and then rename them to DunkinDonuts.bmp, Starbucks.bmp, etc... for each POI. Keep in mind to rename it to the same as the .csv file.

You do not have to have any icons at all

You do not have to have any icons at all if you do not want any.

Just copy the entries from Dunkin & Hortons and paste into your Starbucks file. Then "Save AS" "Coffee.csv"

Just copy the entries from Dunkin & Hortons and paste into your Starbucks file. Then "Save AS" "Coffee.csv"

Or use the merge function in EPE (extra poi editor)

Folder Option

If you create a folder named, say 'Compile',

then create a folder in it called 'Coffee' and a bitmap named 'Coffee.bmp' in the 'Compile' folder (same level as the 'Coffee' sub-folder),

then put your Starbucks, Hortons, etc. files in the 'Coffee' folder,

and run PoiLoader to look in the 'Compile' folder ..

You will get a gpi that (on your unit) puts 'Coffee' as a category under Extras/Custom POIs, with sub-categories called Starbucks, Hortons, etc. and all will have the 'Coffee.bmp' as their icon.

Works with PoiLoader v2.61 and my 765T, 295W anyway.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

re: Folder Option

@JD4x4,

I knew I could put multiple files in a sub folder but I did not realize putting a single bmp in the main folder worked for all POIs. I have been putting a seperate bmp for every POI file.

Little tricks like this are pretty cool.

Thanks,

YW

You're welcome.
(I have no life so I experiment laugh out loud )

I should have added that the .bmp needs to be named exactly the same as the sub-folder, just like when you do it with a single file.

Also works with TourGuide, as I recall. I think you can add _Tourguide to the sub-folder name, put the sub-folder name_TourGuide.mp3 and .bmp in the main folder, and it makes all of the files in the sub-folder a tour guide alert.

Same name

Yeap, I know the same name applies. I didn't think about making it a TourGuide though. There ya' go with those little tips and tricks again.

I might re-structure some of my POI files that share bmps.

Thanks,

@JD

Does a sub-folder, as you describe, result in displaying the nearest coffee shop, regardless of whether it is a Starbucks or Dunkin?

Yes, it does. When you go to Extras/Custom POIs and select Coffee it gives you a selection of All Categories in addition to the individual file names. All Categories gives you the closest pois.

Wrong about TourGuide ..

I was wrong about the TourGuide part...

It doesn't work at the folder level, but it does on a complete file level (add _TourGuide to a .csv or .gpx file).

Sorry about that. (sleepy?)
