Illinois Tollway Oasises and Toll Booths

Hi I am getting ready for a trip this week and I downloaded the Illinois Tollway Oasises
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/19987
And the Illinois Tollway Tolls + Chicago Skyway with toll booth detail
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30554

I made a .wav file for each at http://www2.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php after down loading on my hard drive I renamed the files

Oasis.cvs
Oasis.wav
Oasis.bmp

Illinois Tollway.cvs
Illinois Tollway.wav
Illinois Tollway.bmp

Then I used POI Loader manual and set the alert at 10,000ft and did a simulated run on the GPS to two of the Oasis. The alerts did not come on until you are on the exit ramp to them. The .bmp showed up nice but I would like to have the alerts to come on sooner.

With the toll booths The alert box come up but the .wav dose not play all I get is a bong bong sound. I used the same .bmp file for the toll booth as the oasis just put a different name on it to match the rest of the toll booth files.

Any suggestions on how I can get the alerts for the Oasis to work and to get rid of the bong sound on the toll booths?

Are you using your 260 or

Are you using your 260 or the 1490?
Did you put the sox.exe in the poi loader directory?
Are you sure you do not have double extensions?

Did you follow this exercise?

Using Garmin 1490T

I am using my Garmin 1490T Gps. I have the sox.exe file in the POI Loader. Other POI's with .wave file work ok. I have not read the Beginners Exercise 5 that you sugested but it sure looks like some good info. I have never seen those instructions.

Two thoughts

Regarding the lack of tollway audio, all I can think of is that there is a subtle spelling difference between the csv and wav filenames. I'd check this out first.

Regarding the oases, the alerts may be delayed because they're not on your current roadway (the Tollway) but are on the exit.

First, you could test your 10,000' alert by driving (or easier, simulating) a route to a specific oasis. My guess is that this will give you the 10,000' audio which you desire. If so, I see two solutions (both with issues) that will give you what you want: an alert as you approach each on the Tollway.

The labor-intensive solution is to manually edit the location of each oasis to be at the beginning of the exit ramp (and therefore, on the Tollway) so that nuvi will see a POI on your roadway and give you the 10,000' alert you want. This is the way we get Rest Area Alerts with the Rest Areas Combined file--MrKenFL has IDed each rest area as being at the beginning of the exit ramp rather than be where the rest area itself is. The beauty of this is that it should alert you to each oasis and give no false alerts. The disadvantage is the labor involved modifying each POI location.

The quicker solution is to make the oasis POI file a TourGuide (search The Factory site for lots of info on the whats, hows and whys of TourGuides for Garmins). TourGuides will give you radius alerts of the distance you choose even when they're not on your roadway or route. The beauty of this is that it's a quick fix once you've mastered TourGuides. The disadvantage is that with a radius alert, you will get an alert even when the oasis is on the oncoming traffic side of the roadway or an oasis is on nearby roadways but not the one you're on--like around interchanges and overpasses, etc. This may not be a problem since I think I remember the oases around Chicago are each accessible to traffic in both directions.

Ugh, clear as mud? Wait, was this three thoughts? Sorry. wink

PS--Are you of the age where you remember buying bootleg oleo south of the state line and smuggling it back to WI in the trunk of a car? (If not, ask your parents or aunts/uncles/grandparents.) Just curious. Does WI still have tax stamps on margarine as well as liquor bottles?

Well I thought I check it checked it again but discovered after your suggestion to check one more time and found I was one letter off on naming the files. I am running the simulator now and everything is working good. Thanks for the help. I have to learn more now about the tour guides you talked about.

I was to young to remember the bootleg oleo but sure remember my parents talking about it. They stopped putting the tax stamps on the oleo some time in the 70's but the lable on the liquor bottles sometime in the 90's.. nice link and story about the oleo wars. thanks

Thanks CraigW
As you sugested,
The labor-intensive solution is to manually edit the location of each oasis to be at the beginning of the exit ramp (and therefore, on the Tollway) so that nuvi will see a POI on your roadway and give you the 10,000' alert you want.

I did just that.
Since there was only a few I did just this. I used Goggle maps got the coordinates of the Oasis location on the interstate just before the exit ramp. I put that in the .cvs file and ran the simulator and it worked out good.

the only bad thing, is in the northeast it is really hard to avoid a tollway, you have all the toll roads in Illinois, the main road through the top of Indiana is a toll road, unless you want to go out of your way and take I94 in Michigan, you have the Ohio Turnpike, the New York State Thruway, which by the way is responsible for the Erie Canal, figure that one out. Mass Turnpike, and not to be forgotten the Pennsylvania Turnpike, almost forgot the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway, last but not least are the toll bridges, I don't think you can get from PA to NJ with out paying a toll at least in one direction. Fact of the matter is toll roads are cash cows for the states, and trying to separate a cash cow from a politician is almost impossible.

You won't avoid all of them.

If you set it to avoid tolls you will be routed hours and hours out of your way. You can either pay a $5 toll or a route around it that will put you out of your way by hours (or days).

Maybe

Well, Yah, your right. But it seems the consumer will never get ahead. We pay gas taxes for the non-tollway roads and toll on the tollways....Get ya coming and going
