Lifetime traffic! (advertisements)

Is it possible to avoid the advertisements popping up on Nüvi 1370T and 2370LT
AND: Is it possible to use Tourguide POI in these models, as in Nuvi 760?

ads

Probably not, as it was price you have to pay for "free" traffic. I'm not sure what will happen if you add paid subscription. Maybe than in area of paid service there will be no ads.

.

No way to disable them other than disabling traffic on the unit (which will get rid of the ads) or purchasing a paid traffic subscription for the unit. If you have both paid and free traffic on the unit (for instance Clear Channel paid & Navteq free), the unit will use the subscription (if both are available in the same area) that has the most transmitting stations and/or strongest signal.

Tour Guide POI

As to your second question, you should be able to use TourGuide POI's on your 13xx and 23xx nuvi's. You will need to use .WAV files instead of .MP3 and use the SOX.EXE utility program. This is discussed in detail in other threads and FAQs in the forum.

Don't use

Don't use the supplied traffic adapter that came with the Nuvi.

There is a spot down in the tools area where you can turn off traffic altogether. If you do that you will get no advertisements and no traffic updates. A lot of us have learned to ignor them because they only appear when stopped.

disabling traffic

As per the Garmin support knowledge-base:

Garmin wrote:

Garmin units that come packaged with a free lifetime subscription to Navteq traffic will display pop-up advertisements. These ads pay for the traffic subscription, making it free to you. Although the advertisements can be disabled for as long as you wish, traffic information is disabled at the same time.

To disable the advertisements and traffic on nuvi 205, 705, 805, 465, 1200, 1300, and 1400 series devices, please follow the steps below:

Connect the nuvi to the traffic receiver (vehicle power cable) and an active vehicle outlet
Turn the nuvi on
Touch Tools
Touch Settings
Touch Traffic
Touch the box labeled Enabled.

This will remove check mark from the box, disabling both the advertisements and the traffic service. To turn the traffic (and advertisements) back on, repeat these six steps to replace the check mark.

To disable the advertisements and traffic on nuvi 2200, 2300, 2400, and 3700 series and the dezl 560, please follow the steps below:

Connect the nuvi to the traffic receiver (vehicle power cable) and an active vehicle outlet
Turn the nuvi on
Touch Tools
Touch Settings
Touch Traffic
Touch Traffic
Touch Disabled
Touch Save

The advertisements and traffic alerts will now be disabled. To turn both on again, please repeat steps 1-6, touch Enabled, then touch Save.

To disable the advertisements and traffic on the nuvi 1690, please follow these steps:

Turn the nuvi on
Touch Tools
Touch Settings
Touch Security
Touch the option under Position Reporting

Turning off Position Reporting will disable the advertisements and traffic on the 1690. To enable them again, return to the Security page and turn Position Reporting back on.

To disable the advertisements and traffic on the nuLink 1695, please do the following:

Garmin nuvi 1350lmt, no ads

I been using my Garmin nuvi 1350lmt for about 3 weeks, here in NW Illinois, NW Chicago area, I receive free traffic updates and with no ads, not sure why I'm not receiving ads.

255WT

About 8 weeks ago a store was selling the 255WT as a door crasher for 49$ + tax & simply couldn't resist and picked one up.

I've always recieved the traffic signals in the areas I've driven in and would say it's accurate 50% of the time. I also have never had a pop up ad. grin
I'm running version 710 and not sure if that has anything to do with it. rolleyes

Traffic signals is new for

Traffic signals is new for me only a few weeks with my new 2460 so I don't have much experience yet. I also have not seen ads, but they say the ads only pop up when you are stopped. My traffic driving so far has always been on expressway, no stops, so that's why I assume I haven't seen ads.

Jim...

Seems there was a way to turn them off...

Seems to me that a year ago or so someone posted a way to turn the ads off without turning off the traffic service--you might want to search for that although it's likely that Garmin closed that door with subsequent software updates....

lifetime traffic ads

man, thats a bummer how annoying.

It's not necessarily a bad

It's not necessarily a bad thing depends on situation

Advertisements

I have a 1490 and a 765 and get advertisements on the 765 but not the 1490! Perhaps the answer lies on the fact that when I bought the 765 it stated, "free lifetime traffic suscription" but the 1490 just stated "lifetime traffic suscription"; note the absence of the word "free".
Could that be the reason?

I have a 3790T, which came

I have a 3790T, which came with "Free" Lifetime Traffic (and ads). On a whim, I purchased a Premium traffic subscription and have not seen the ads since.

http://www8.garmin.com/traffic/fm/index.html

Follow the steps to Add Traffic
Then select the appropriate region, for example North America ... $49.99

Besides not showing the ads,

Besides not showing the ads, what does premium do that free doesn't? I've thought about getting the premium subscription, but from the description on Garmin's page, I don't see what this does that free doesn't do. So clearly, I'm missing something. Thank you.

The free traffic with ads comes from Navteq. Paid traffic (no ads) can be Navteq or Clear Channel. Depending on where you travel, some folks find that Clear Channel provides better traffic results--or provides traffic in cities not covered by Navteq. Garmin's web site shows coverage maps for both providers to help with your decision.

All in all, paying for Navteq gains you nothing other than ad removal--paying for Clear Channel gives you a different set of FM stations providing coverage.

One more thing to consider--if you pay for ClearChannel on a device that has free Navteq traffic, your GPS will connect with the first provider it detects and as a consequence, even with paid ClearChannel traffic, you'll see ads if Navteq first connected to your unit. If there's a way to avoid this, someone else may offer help.

Thank you. That helps a lot.

Traffic

I've had my Nuvi 1490t for a few months now and I'm always using the traffic information. I think I've only seen an advertisement once in the beginning. Even then, it wasn't really in the way.

Life is what you make of it.

Just an FYI...

According to Garmin's Privacy Policy (http://tinyurl.com/3ra3cmy) Garmin tracks how long your GPS unit (or Nuviphone) is turned on, what ads you see, what ads you click on, and what ads you respond to by navigating to the location of the advertised business.

There is other information that Garmin collects as well, such as information from wireless devices and/or from cell towers. Unfortunately, Garmin isn't very clear about exactly what they do with this information...though they do say this:

"Garmin's navigation applications and products collect and upload information such as your location, speed, and direction in order to enhance our and our strategic partners' and marketing partners' products and applications, provide you traffic information, more accurately calculate expected arrival times, and enhance the map functions."

.

I do not allow Garmin to collect info on me as per their question on MyGarmin.

As well, I erase my tracks, and remove my SD before any updates. As I have a BT headset, they get jack from me for my info to the unit.

Hmm, maybe we should start sending them a bill for 'services rendered'...

No ads and different traffic

I have a 1450 with a traffic receiver I bought and a 1490T that can with free lifetime traffic. Both say Lifetime Navtek traffic subscription. Neither shows ads, but the two units show totally different traffic results when I have them list the traffic. Not sure why that would be.
