Nuvi 350 and SD card size.......help me!!!! :)

Hi all

This is probably a regular question. I have a Garmin Nuvi 350(second hand). It came with a SanDisk 512MB MicroSD card. I bought a Verbatim 4GB SDHC class 4 card yesterday. The only problem is that the Nuvi won't recognise the new card. It is recognised by Windows when I connect the Nuvi to the computer.

I did the Garmin WebUpdater - it says I have the latest software installed.

I know the new card didn't cost much (€7.99) but I would like to have it for mp3s etc

Any ideas?

Thanks

John

That format probably came out after the Nuvi did.

I'm pretty sure SDHC was released well after the Nuvi 350 came out so it's probably simply incompatible. I'd recommend a standard SD card, 512 MB is plenty big for storing MP3 and some POIs.

SD Card

From Garmin support.

Unit Series Maximum Size of SD Card
nuvi series 16GB
zumo 400 and 500 4GB
zumo 220 and 600 16GB
dezl series 16GB
StreetPilot c500 4GB
StreetPilot c300* 2GB
StreetPilot i-Series* 2GB
StreetPilot 7200 / 7500 2GB

Depending on the model of your unit, it may use either a full size SD card or a microSD card. If you are not sure which your unit requires, please refer to its documentation. When using a card with a larger capacity and when the files on the card are large in number and/or size, the unit's ability to draw mapping may be slowed.

If you have an OEM dealer device, please refer to the series above that fits your device.

*Note: StreetPilot c300 and i-Series units do not currently support the SDHC (High Capacity) cards.

*Note: All devices that support SDHC (High Capacity) cards will support up to class 10 cards.

I've bought three 350's...

as gifts and include a 2GB with each...works well...it may not be large enough for your needs, but it's an older model Nuvi...

You may need to give it more time

I recently switched from a 4GB to a 8GB card in my 760. I was concerned because when I first turned it on it did not display any of the songs or playlists on the 8GB card. I decided it might be thinking about it and just ignored it for awhile. Maybe 30 minutes later (driving time with the nuvi on) I checked and everything was working fine.

I don't know why but it appears the nuvi needs to spend some time looking at the new card and digesting the information on it. It is not an instant thing.

Fingers crossed....

I'll try leaving it on for a while and see. Some more info - I copied over the folders/files that were on the original card - EULA and GARMIN\GMAPSUPP.IMG and GARMIN\GMAPSUPP.UNL

When I switch the unit on it says "Cannot load maps". Maybe as you (Jim) said if I leave it on for a while it might recognise it.

Thanks all for the help smile

Garmin 350 SD card

I currenly use a 16 GB SDHC card from the MicroCenter quite satisfactorily for the past few years. It is not a microSD card in a converter to make it fit into the SD slot.

Garmin 350 SD card

The card that came with it is a MicroSD card with the adapter. Gonna leave it running in case the it takes a while to recognise it. After that, will format it....and after that if no good, gonna swallow the damn thing lol

Thanks again guys

Sub Directory Layout

I have a NUVI 350 and I can't say if the SD card is the issue or the setup. You must setup the disk the same way that the NUVI appears on computer if you plug it in.

In other words, you must have it as follows. Mine shows up on my laptop as the E: Drive

E:/Garmin/POI

Load the POIs to the Garmin/POI subdirectory. I go one step beyond and setup POI subdirectories. It makes it easier to keep track of them, and with the latest POI Loader, you can name your POI files.

E:/Garmin/POI/Red Light
E:/Garmin/POI/Business
E:/Garmin/POI/Rest Areas

In addition, the 350 has an interesting way of sorting the files when you open Custom POIs. It first sorts in order of the creation of the subdirectory, not in alphabetic order. The POI files then show alphabetic after that. A subdirectory created at 9:43 AM will come before a subdirectory created at 9:44 AM, regardless it's name.

I use this quirk to make sure that files that I want to access readily are put at the beginning. Red Light Cameras are tied to a proximity alert, so I don't have to access that file. It simply pops up as an alert.

I make files specific to any vacation trip and load them only when I'm going on the trip. I want them at the beginning, so I made my Vacation subdirectory first and all the files show at the beginning of the list of POI files. I may also want to easily figure where the next rest area is, so I made that subdirectory immediately after Vacation. When I return from my trip, I delete the POIs file that I created in the Vacation subdirectory, but leave the subdirectory itself intact. When you pull up Custom POis it's as if the Vacation subdirectory was no longer there, but it really is.

After that I created Business subdirectory that lists businesses that i might look for regularly.

Hope this helps and not confuses.
