Incomplete Download of csv file

FYI ...
When I download the http://www.poi-factory.com/node/2661 file It stops in the middle of the Zippo Lighter Visitors center on line 6067. I am just placing a quote there to close column 4 but I don't have the complete POI. There should also be another 5 POIs after this.

Any thoughts?

6067 POIs seems to be the right count

I am not sure what you mean.

When I download the http://www.poi-factory.com/node/2661 file, Windows reports "Download Complete".

Excel shows that there are 6067 POIs in the downloaded file.

When I load the POIs onto my Garmin 255W using POI Loader 2.6.1 , I see that "You have successfully installed 6067 custom POIs on your device."

If I open the file directly at POI Factory instead of downloading it, Excel still indicates 6067 POIs.

What makes you think there should be 5 more POIs?

When POI loader comes to the comma between Drive and Bradford in the line you posted, it thinks everything beyond the comma is a fifth field and ignores it.

It is probably that it

It is probably that it states the following:
"Includes 6072 locations in the following areas:" on the download page.

How did i miss that

Dang, it is in bold letters too. smile

Well, no matter what it says in the description, there are actually 6067 POIs in the file.

Sane Problem

I had the same problem with my BofA file more than once for different reasons.

1st it was a comma in the "C" field. Next, it was a character that Jon's scanning program did not like in the "D" field.

BOTH TIMES, IT WAS A CHARACTER IN THE LINE "BEFORE" THE LINE THAT WAS CUT OFF.

So, whoever fixes the problem needs to know that! Deleting the cut-off line from the original file will probably just cause the next line to be cut-off.

I encountered something like

I encountered something like this when I uploaded the Canada Rest Stops POI. The file works fine, but the site believes one of the entries is in Washington State. One of the entries is close to the Washington border, but opening up the file in Extra POI Editor reveals no Canada rest stops in the US.

.

In the last entry in the .csv file, The Zippo Lighter Visitors Center phone number is truncated.

The 5 missing entries to bring the count to 6072 are present in the GPX version of the file. I've emailed the authour.

Not in this case

There was no error reported when POI Loader came to the line mentioned, and there is no error in the line before it.

The fix in this case is to put in the rest of the information in field 4 of line 6067 and add the missing ending double quote.

Here are lines 6066 and 6067:

-83.573165,35.832668,Zipline - Adventure Park at Five Oaks,"1628 Parkway,Sevierville TN 37862"

-78.643916,41.955896,Zippo Lighter Visitors Center,"932 Zippo Drive,Bradford PA 16701,814-368-

Note that the last line is missing part of the phone number and the closing double quotes. As I said, the missing ending double quote causes the comma between Drive and Bradford to be a field separator instead of a punctuation. That is what caused the rest of the line to be "cut off".

It happens that the error is in the last line of the csv file. If that particular line were somewhere else in the file it would have prevented the rest of the pois from being loaded in addition to cutting off the rest of the line.

Error

OK, so this is another error to watch out for.

Haven't had that problem since I started using MS Excel.

Excel would not fix the count discrepency or the missing text

metricman wrote:

True Excel would have put in the needed final double quote but the line still would appear to be "cut off" when viewed in a GPSr (because of the actually missing text) and there would still be the count discrepancy mentioned above.

No count discrepency, 5 missing lines

There is no count discrepency but actually 5 missing lines. See Waasup's quote below. Whatever is wrong with line 6067 is causing the download to stop before finishing the line and the last 5 POIs. Without having the actual file we can't tell why the download is stopping. The file maintainer was also emailed by Waasup.

Thanks Waasup, don't know why I didn't think to email the maintainer. I'll go look for the gpx version now.

Possible other errors in CSV filre

The following 3rd column entries have a 4th column beginning with a leading space (sometimes this causes problems).
Dungeon and Only Known....
Adams Memorial.....
Hollow Mountain....
Wolf Country.....

The 3rd column line with the entry
Stonehenge - U of Missouri
has a leading comma in the 4th column.

And finally as stated in the line beginning
Zippo Lighter....
there is no closing quotes.

Kudos to all at POI Factory - a great site!

the 5 missing lines causes the count discrepancy.

……

The 5 missing lines causes the count discrepancy I mentioned. 6072 pois per the site wording and the gpx file vs 6067 in the csv file.

Apparently they are not being blocked during download from the site because of the faulty line 6067 and there are no more lines in the csv file at POI Factory.

The truncation of line 6067 is already in the csv file at POI Factory.

The faulty line does cause further truncation of the text when POI Loader installs the Zippo poi onto a GPSr.

I doubt the download process from Poi Factory to a person's computer would block part of a faulty csv file. Usually a file download process does not check anything inside the file, it just downloads it as is.

Thanks All...

I got the Email amd recive this ppost and will be looking into the issue at hand.. I will need to talk to the auther of Extra Poi editor since that is what I have been using without a flaw at most...

Again, Thanks all for your input and will be looking into it since I am going to be updating the file very soon a nyways!

EPE v4.88 worked ok

I just now downloaded the gpx version, opened it with Extra_POI_Editor version 4.88 and then saved as a "Garmin CSV(*.csv).

The result was a csv file with all 6072 pois and the zippo one is complete.
