Battery replacement

Hello all -

I have been reading about GPS battery life and battery replacement here. I have seen the cautions about replacing your battery yourself and watched the videos on how to do so.

It looks to me that replacing the battery on a Nuvi 650 is doable if one uses a moderate amount of caution. After my keyboard on my MacBook (kept on the kitchen table) became sticky over the years, I replaced it; and that meant turning the MacBook upside down and working from the bottom towards the top, removing everything until you reached the keyboard, replacing it, then reassembling everything in reverse.

So, anyone actually replaced a Nuvi 650 battery? Wish to share your experience?

BTW: I used the Nuvi on a recent trip to New England, primarily for the drive from Providence to Boston, without plugging it into the cigarette lighter socket. It was fully charged, four bars, and it was down to one bar within an hour. Very disappointing. It is four years old.

Many thanks.

Agree - take your time and it's pretty easy.

For What It May Be

For What It May Be Worth...

Got a friend, who called Garmin after the battery in an older unit died, and was told it would be replaced free of charge.

When it came back from service, it even had new maps.

You might give Garmin a call at (800) 800-1020.

Never hurts to try them.

Easy in a 885t

The battery in my 885t was easy but it just plugs in on the back - it is unusual for a nuvi. I bought one for about $15 from buy.com and it made a lot of difference. My nuvi first started loosing a charge rapidly and got to the point that it wouldn't hardly even work plugged in. The new battery totally solved it. Wish I had done it earlier.

I would replace it even if I had to break open the case and solder it in. I've seen the on-line instructions and I'm confident I could do it.

Did it for a 760

I replaced the battery in my 760 when it wouldn't charge anymore.

I would consider the job to be moderately easy with the right tools. I would say you need to a little handy and extra handy. For folk with bigger fingers or soft finger nails, task of unplugging the battery and plugging it back in will require a set of tiny needle nose pliers.

But heck, if Garmin will do it free of charge, why do it yourself? I'll do it that way next time.

Thanks. That's the very link I found and was going to use.

The only thing that looks difficult is removing the receiver.

Follow-up questions:

1. Once replaced, did you note any significant improvement in your batter life?

2. How old was the battery when you replaced it?

Many thanks.h

Replacing Nuvi 650 battery

Wow. Free replacement AND new maps. That is customer service of the highest order, kind of what I have come to expect from Apple.

I mentioned replacing the keyboard on my MacBook. Early on, I had one, the a second problem with that MacBook. The second time I took it back to the Apple Store, they apologized for the inconvenience the problems had caused and handed me a brand new MacBook.
