I have found amazon to have some good prices for the Lifetime maps:

You are asking about North American maps, right?
First, the bad news: if you bought a 3790LMT, it would have cost about $50 more than the 3790T and automatically includes lifetime maps. (Or good news: if you're shopping for a 3790 now and don't already have one--and want lifetime maps with it--the 3790LMT is the cheapest way to get lifetime maps.)
Second, the good(?) news: If you're willing to wait*, you may find the lifetime map update available for $60-70 including S&H. As of right now, expect to pay $76-80 from Amazon or any of their Sellers. The Online Code option is currently cheaper than the mailed "credit card" choice.

*The best prices seem to occur around the holiday season of Nov-Dec or thereabouts. Keep reading here often at the POI Factory since someone will almost certainly post any great offers on map updates but be aware that sometimes these offers expire in one day or so...the early bird gets the worm.

They have to lower the prices on Garmins and Maps and Traffic. No choice. Our smart phones get almost daily free updates with a ton of options for travel, restaurants, happy hours, etc. I still love my Garmin but they should be offering Lifetime maps as standard equipment, not options. In fact, they should make offers to people that already have Garmin's and give them a heck of a deal just to keep them as good customers. In my opinion.
