Normally I install map updates on my PC, but they take space on the HD. I would assume I can remove some of these older updates without doing any harm... or what?

MapSource?
If you are referring to MapSource and installing the Lifetime map updates, yes, they will accumulate. As I install each quarterly map update, I remove the previous one from the PC to free up disk space. I've never had a good reason to keep older map updates.
In Windows, simply go into Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs. You will find each of the map updates listed there. Remove the ones that you no longer want to keep.
