Haines City, Florida Red Light Cameras

Red light cameras went active in Haines City, Florida in northwest Polk County back in January.

Here are the intersections: The red light camera systems will monitor north- and southbound traffic at four U.S. 27 intersections at Bates Road, Polk City Road, Southern Dunes/Hammock Lake boulevards and West Commerce Avenue. A system will also monitor east and westbound motorists at the traffic light on U.S. 17/92 in front of the Publix supermarket at the Haines City Mall.

More cameras in the area are planned and installed, but not active yet.

Here is a link to the story in my newspaper I work at, The Ledger.

I've been doing some poking

I've been doing some poking around with the red light camera update here that I installed on my Garmin. The red light camera at 17/92 in front of the Publix supermarket is not listed.

Next time I'm up there, which will only be a matter of days, I'll note the exact intersection and forward to the moderators here.

I finally made it up to

I finally made it up to Haines City yesterday and marked the missing intersection with my hand held Garmin Colorado.

The coordinates are:

W 081'38.282
N 28'06.390

I'll send an email out to Miss POI as well.

It would be very helpful to Miss POI if you converted those coordinates to decimal degrees since that is the only format that works in POI files.

I would be happy to if

I would be happy to if someone could show me how. Do I set my GPS to that function then record the spot? I'm pretty new to all this, so bear with me.

Converter

Here is one converter website: http://www.csgnetwork.com/gpscoordconv.html

Your coordinates were in degrees & decimal minutes. When converted to decimal degrees, it comes out
as -81.638033, 28.106500 which is the format required for POI files.

Double check me that I got it right. When I put those coordinates in Google Earth, they came out at the intersection of Old Dixie Hwy and Hwy 17/92. Is that correct? Here is a photo: http://i55.tinypic.com/293bn8g.jpg

For future reference, you can probably change the coordinates format option in the Garmin Colorado to decimal degrees so you won't have to go through the conversion.

Gary A--That link;

Gary A--That link; http://i55.tinypic.com/293bn8g.jpg, is spot on accurate.

That's where the missing Red Light Camera in Haines City, FL. is located. Thank you very much for the info, the link, and the bit of a a lead for me do my own fooling around.

I'm a full time photojournalist and more of an artist, but I have a bit of tech head side to me too. A little help from folks in the know, never hurts.

Once again thanks.

OK Then

I just wanted to verify myself, that I was doing the conversion correctly. wink

The last thing I would want to do is to give you wrong info that you then pass on to Miss POI. That would not be good. sad
