Garmin and MP3?

I have not been following the new Garmin products. On the Garmin web page I selected the features option and put in MP3. Only three products came up, 755, 765 775.
Does that mean that with all the other new Garmin products you have to use wave files for your alerts?
Tell me this isn't so.

Yes for the newer models.I

Yes for the newer models.I think the last model for mp3 was 295w.

Thanks for the quick reply

Thanks for the quick reply.
I just read your FAQ on wave alerts. If the wave files are as easy to use as the mp3 files I guess you do not need an MP3 player.
I am still using my NUVI 855 so no need to change yet.

Mp3 is over rated for your GPS

Not a big deal since most cars these days have that option already and that sound quality coming out of your GPS is not that great. That feature is a nice to have not you will find that you will not use it that much.

Over Rated?

I plug my gps into my stereo and listen to mp3 books and music. When driving instructions are given the book/music is halted and the instructions are given (heard loudly and clearly) Then the book/music resumes exactly where it was paused, until further instructions are given. What are the options with the new units, When you hear something coming out of the gps, quickly reach over and turn the volume down on the stereo? By then the instructions have been given and all you can do is look at the screen to see what the turn is. Over Rated??

Need MP3

I use it frequently. The charter bus I drive does not have any MP3 capability in the driver area. I like to listen to my tunes and the gps directions AND not disturb the passengers at night. The only way to do this would be two mono headsets. NOT! I use an AD2P bluetooth headset and get both thru one headset - in stereo. with the music muted when Jill starts giving directions. I have not found a single car that will mute the installed stereo when my GPS gives direction.
[RANT] Garmin's one size fits all approach does not cut it for the newer units. If TOMTOM has a bluetooth and MP# player unit available when I have to replace mine I might have to change brands. [/RANT]

That's one of the features of my 660 that I like the most. I play mp3 music and also get the GPS audio, all through the car stereo. It sounds great exclaim

What I don't understand is why the mp3 feature isn't standard on all Garmin units. I mean it only costs Garmin a few cents to include a 3.5mm audio jack on the unit, and the software is already coded so that costs nothing.

MP3 for Alerts only

I have been using the mp3 player mostly for alerts.

I have used it through the FM transmitter (on the truck stereo) but you have to be out in the boonies to find an empty station.

I never used the jack, maybe I should.

Code

The license to use the code does though.

As for a jack, millions of units timed by whatever the real amount is, is being fed to the shareholders for more dividends. Welcome to the corporate prostitutes.

This is rampant throughout the world.

Could be they don't want us messing with the Garmin

I don't know Garmin's logic either. It could be that they don't want us changing songs while driving. Same logic as the startup screen we have to "agree" to periodically. Pretty stupid because it takes so long for the GPS to startup nobody sits there waiting on it before entering their destination.

I play tunes from my 760 and 885t too. My 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara and my 2009 BMW 128i vert do not play MP3s. The bimmer could have if I'd wanted to pay more than the 885t cost for that priviledge. Both my nuvis also do bluetooth. On trips I listen to MP3s, get phone over the speakers of the car (and talk into a remote microphone), and get navigation instructions. All integrated nicely. Each nuvi cost me around $200. Pretty good deal.

I could get a little MP3 player, I suppose, but it wouldn't have the display of the nuvi to help picking which playlist to listen to next.

If I see a 765t at a good price I may stockpile one. No way I want a new one as long as I can get a nuvi that plays MP3s.
