Before they pulled the cameras from the freeways the mobile units were still operating on the freeways. I saw multiple times where there was no signage in place except right next to the van/SUV. Catch you by surprise...GOTCHA!

Drivers beware.

Seeing we don't have these where I come from, am I to assume that these signs must be placed a certain/specific distance from the mobile unit?

If so.. I wonder what would happen if you stopped your vehicle, walked back and took photo's of the incorrectly placed signs.. and then went into court with your evidence (photo's).

Would that be enough to get the ticket kicked out?

Cameras

I wish our city would speed up its intended use of speed cameras. Last year the city and the state police set up a radar site on the interstate entering the city on the morning of the start of the state wrestling tournament. From 9:30 to 12:30 they caught over 160 violators. Our newspaper had many angry letters condemning the police from making a visit to this city a bad feeling and they shall never return.
The city and state repeated this radar site this year and in the same time frame wrote 154 citations; eighteen for no proof of insurance, seven for not having a drivers license, four for not wearing a seat belt, and one for having an open container of alcohol. they also handed out 53 warnings 10 for speeding.
The cameras would not stop the insurance. alcohol, seatbelt issues but 154 speeders would have been caught in that time frame plus many more since the camera works 24/7 and not 3 hours a day. Those police men could have been doing duty somewhere else.
I suppose there will be more letters condemning the crackdown in our newspaper and they will not attend the sellout wrestling tournament.

To add to that...

If one of those speeders, drunks, and people with no insurance hit, and killed/ injured one of your loved ones, how are you feeling about that?

People would be up in arms that those 'dirty pigs' weren't doing their jobs. Pick your poison!

When I was up north, I saw a road sign that said, "For all those that hate tickets, raise your right foot!".

Well come to Arizona

If you have mexican plates, they will not issue a money request, if you are a motor cycle again its ok to do what you want. I don't know about you but I don't like selective enforcement, a LEO won't just take a pic, they will stop you, no matter who and maybe even take you to the holding cell. I always vote against any County Sup, that voted these crap Cams in

Good one

How would you enforce?

Accident

A few months ago I was at a red light camera intersection and the light had turned amber and decided not to go through the intersection (but if there was no camera I would gone for it). Unfortunately the driver behind me thought I would go through and smashed my bumper and gave me a slight whiplash. I always wonder are these cameras helping traffic safety or collecting revenue for the city?

Traffic Revenue

It's for collecting revenue under the guise of traffic safety.

red light cameras

There has been a lot of discussion about the efficacy of red light cameras in the news papers lately. One article talked about situations where there were emergency vehicles and/or police waving you through in an emergency. The article said that you would still get a ticket but that it would be dismissed if you went to the traffic court and fought it. Unbelievable, you would have to waste at least 4 hours of your day, just for obeying the law.

flash went off today

I am a big fan of red light cameras. I stated that I stood and watched and saw that at least in one case, the yellow is timed properly and I saw based on the flash, that the cameras functioned properly.

Today, I was behind a nervous nelly who was going like 3-5 mph through the intersection. Well, wouldn't you know, as I proceeded I looked up and saw the light turn from green to yellow. As I got further along my way, FLASH! FLASH!

In my mind I thought, wtf?? Nobody else was later going through the intersection than myself.

So let's look at it logically, the two flashes went of and represent photos. My car was already up the block, so even with my pic taken, there is no way I can be issued a ticket. Produce a photo where when the first pic was taken, that my car was before or on the stop line. It's impossible.

I got to thinking, could someone have turned right on red? Google earth is great. Not only can I see the intersection with cams in detail, but sure enough, a no turn on red sign....

It's astounding how many little towns have cams now. I copied/pasted this from a town website:

Q: Why does the camera flash when no one actually runs the red light?

A: The red-light camera system is designed to take two rear photographs of a vehicle that may be committing a violation. The first rear image captures the vehicle prior to entering the intersection with the traffic signal red, and the second image shows the vehicle continuing through the intersection during the red signal phase.

On occasion, a vehicle approaching an intersection with a red light may come to a stop before entering the intersection yet trigger the red-light camera system, causing the flash to discharge. In addition, a vehicle approaching the intersection and making a right turn may not come to a complete stop but only slow before continuing to turn, triggering the red-light camera system and causing the flash to discharge.

The Police Department reviews each violation event captured by the red-light camera system and makes the final decision to issue a citation. All flash incidents do not equate to a citation; however, the imaging results in 80%+ accuracy in identifying excessive speed approaches.

Camera Location Finder

Hi,

Not sure if this has been posted but I was surfing around and found this site. http://www.photoenforced.com/

Right on Red

I do not trust the RLC's, and no longer make a right on red where there is an RLC. Not worth the time, aggravation and expense to fight an [unwinnable] ticket. Who they gonna believe that I did or did not fully stop, me, or the government's automated toll collector?

Not accurate

There are 22 cameras in Rochester NY and it lists 25 cameras. 3 are duplicates. So if that is 3 out of 22, then how accurate is it.

We are more accurate here.

the video

What is there to believe? either a full stop was made, or it wasn't. In locations where there is a video, you'll get a link so you can see for yourself. That's what's great about the technology, there is no judgement, only fact.

Not necessarily

I've heard of people getting tickets for coming to a complete stop, but not staying stopped for 3 seconds, or whatever criteria the rulers of the red light cameras deem necessary. Like, if you stop after the white line. I can totally understand why some people don't turn on red lights at red light camera intersections. It's not worth getting a ticket.

No sure if the check or accuracy but just figured I would post. I have found some errors in my area to.

Accuracy at what point in time may be the right question

I think one of the reasons members of this site think that our RLC/Speed camera files are more accurate is that members check them out.

Tell you of my experience. I went to the municipality site for my town and got to a page that listed where the cameras were. I checked them against our file and one was not there. I went to the location and got the coordinates, reported it th JM, and it was added in the next cycle.

I do not remember that camera ever being spoken about in our papers. It was just put in without press comment. There was clear signage in the area that warned of the camera so one did not need an alert to know that one was approaching a camera.

There is no way that ANY file (including that of poi-factory) can be instantaneously accurate if there are no notices upon which someone can act.

Once a city gets Automated Traffic Enforcement cameras and there is no particular public outcry about the cameras being for revenue only, I can understand why a new camera might be installed without fanfare.
