Richmond,VA to Boston, MA (Mass)

When I try to calculate a route from Richmond, VA to Boston, MA. It takes me through OH and into Canada. Can someone confirm otherwise? Put in "near" Richmond, VA and then to:

1 City Hall Plaza
Boston, MA 02201

Tell me what you get.

What avoidances do you have

What avoidances do you have selected?

I routed from Richmond to that address in Boston and it routed up 95 through DC, Baltimore, New York, etc.

Make sure you don't have Toll Roads selected to avoid.

Oh shoot, that is exactly

Oh shoot, that is exactly what it is!!!!!! The dang toll roads, thanks MM

EDIT: And what toll roads that have, cost like $25 or more!!!!

I did it on MapSource

From Richmond, VA to Boston, it went up I-95, and ends up via I-90, goes thru NYC.

Avoiding tolls (and trolls)...

Here in the South... toll roads are not really a big issue. Can't even think of one in the East TN area. Although there's talk of starting a toll to get into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but don't think the trolls would like that. smile

However... in New England... they are every where! I'm sure if I still lived there I'ld know the ways to bypass them. But, as a visitor... it's nice to be able to "Zumo around them"... and keep the change!!

You know, even with the

You know, even with the tolls disabled, it should not have taken me all the why to OH and thru Canada. I know that there are better ways (without tolls) to get to MA.

For the record>>>

I drive to Boston from the Philly area all the time. You want to avoid I-95 like the plague!!! That drive through NYC and southern CT are MISERABLE.

I would take the NJ Tpk to the very end in Ft Lee...then take 9W to the Palisades Parkway to 87/287 and cross the Tappan Zee Bridge...then take 287 to 684 to 84 (through Hartford or take 691 around Hartford and back to 84) to 90 (Mass Pike) to Boston.

Been doing the drive for at least 25 years as my brother lives in Boston. JM2C, YMMV smile

"You can't get there from here"

or From Richmond

If you are interested in the easiest but not the shortest route from Richmond - Boston area try:
I-95 to I-17N (Fredericksburg) to I-66W to I-81N
to I-84E thru Hartford to Mass Pike. As stated before you can take I-691 around Hartford. Do this route several times a year from Florida !
Least tolls too although that is no factor.
There are a couple other ways once you get by Harrisburg, PA but has been heavy road construction to deal with the past 1 1/2 years !
Will be driving that route myself in 2 weeks going to NH.

Have fun

Driving out of Boston's Logan - watch out for falling tiles in the tunnels of the "BIG DIG"
I was born and raised 10 miles South of Bean Town!
Has always made me nervous driving in and around !
Boston drivers = NYC drivers !

Boston Rules of the Road

At road merging points in the Boston area the general rule of the road is "if you make eye contact, you lose."

Boston's easy to drive in if you know stop light's meanings:

Red light: stomp on the gas and run it
Yellow light: stomp on the gas and run it
Green light: stomp on the brake! The drivers on the cross road will be running the red. This is not a joke, but sage advice I followed for many years.

Depends on where you want to go in Boston. I lived on the south shore of Boston, and messing around with the Hartford/I-90 pike road was a pain in my opinion. I preferred I-95. There's a nasty stretch around New Haven, admittedly. But, I-95 is nasty for about 1000 other miles between Boston and Florida, so what's 10 miles of congestion around New Haven count for? Most of northern CT and virtually all of RI are empty of traffic.
