If I'm reading you right
Just go back a screen and hit Detour. If a reasonable rerouting is possible it will change directions to your destination.
Sometimes it works, other times it just can't get you out of the predicament.

another way is to just try to navigate around it and proceed in the general direction you were heading and use your best judgment but don't change your destination on the unit. You will get a few "recalculating" messages but it will soon pick an alternate route.
Just don't be like the Allstate commercial with "Mayhem" and panic when you hear the warnings LOL
I wouldn't do this around bodies of water where bridges or other areas where limiting road conditions could limit your options
