Speed/red light cameras in NoVA?

Parton the newbie question here, but I know that in Northern VA (Fairfax, Arlington, etc.), there are speed/red light cameras in place since 1995, but are they really active and operational, today? I haven't really been following the news about them but if I recall, there was a time where the General Assembly banned them and then subsequently reinstated them in 2007? Was that true?

Since I'm not the kind of driver to run lights or speed (haven't had a ticket in over 10+ years smile) but lately with all the news about the increase in red light cameras in neighboring MD neighborhoods, it's very easy to not notice them before and be caught off guard.

I remember when I was driving my wife's car in MD several weeks ago which had a TomTom GO 720 recently and it had the red light/safety camera POI installed (from TomTom) and it started beeping as I was approaching an intersection. I don't ever remember a red light/safey camera on that intersection before so that was a surprise to me. This got me wondering about the Garmin NUVI 255 that I'm using which apparently doesn't have such an option from Garmin.

RE: Speed/red light cameras in NoVA?

First off, welcome to the site.

As to speed and red light cameras in NVA, the POI-Factory has a very extensive list of speed and red-light cameras that are all user verified. Clicking on the Red Light Cameras tab will bring up the download page - however - access is restricted to those members who have contributed to the site. Contributions are counted in two ways. First, you can do a monetary contribution that allows access to the files, or, you can contribute by becoming an active member and posting to the forums for 3 out of 5 consecutive weeks. This earns you a badge - the windmill. Other badges a user earns are the compass for either building and submitting a POI file or contributing to an existing POI file and being recognized for that contribution. The third badge is the General Maintainer stars which shows continued activity over a longer period of time, and it also unlocks additional tools for working with a POI file you have submitted and maintain. The final badge is a small tree signifying you have been singled out for your contributions for the previous year. Usually only one or two of these are awarded each year, so it is a very special badge.

Our moderator, Miss POI, also awards a special award each week to one or two members that have done an outstanding job over the previous week or for a longer period and haven't been otherwise recognized. The COW or Contributor of the Week award is a trophy which shows only for the week.

You will find using the Garmin to be a little different than the Tom-Tom and the majority of members here are Garmin users. We are ready to answer any number of questions, but we strongly suggest you begin with the FAQs. I also suggest you go to the Garmin website and download the user manual for your unit. The user manual will also be a great source in answering questions and has so much more information than the guide shipped in the box.

POI files

Your Garmin 255 does have the ability to use custom POIs. This, according to the Garmin web site:

"In addition, nüvi 255 accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs."

It doesn't have the ability to play MP3 sound files, I don't know about WAV, but it will be able to give you audible alerts and warnings. Just download the traffic camera files (redlight and speed), install them using POI Loader and you will be set.

In NoVA, the debate over legality and effectiveness goes back and forth every two years. Depending on what the General Assembly and/or local authorities deem at the time, the cameras are either off or on. Even if they're off, they leave the physical hardware in place for pending the outcome of the next round of debates. rolleyes

Miss POI

Thanks! I assume the $5 is sufficient to get me started to download the necessary files for my Garmin Nuvi 255 to start? Any prorate if I want to upgrade to the $20 a year?

Thanks!! I'll check out the POI Loader on Garmin's site and read up on it. Great info here.
