Hey, Republicans are just as guilty of this. Hello, Florida?! Jeb Bush didn't seem to have any problems with this at all. And, many others as well.

This is not a Dem thing in the least.

I never blamed anyone. I just state what Obama stated.

If it was up to me, I would show the Dems and Repubs the exit door and start all over. smile

Personal Info

Did not like what I found on this site - to much personal information. I removed myself and my family.

Finding Personal Information

With the advent of computers and the internet, finding personal information has become much easier. It is unfortunate that we cannot protect ourselves and our identities. No wonder identity theft is on the rise.

Thank you for the link and the removal instructions.

Personal Privacy Is No Longer

As other have said, there's no longer such a thing as personal privacy. the information is often incorrect, but it's public. Oh well, guess we've gotta live with it. And when there's 300,000,000 of us in the USA, they can't always have it correct. Unreliable data in the data makes the whole data base unreliable.

If their accuracy is the same for everyone else

as it was for me, I'm not too worried. It was pretty far off.

I am laughing at the paranoia here

You might or might not realize it but the indisputable fact is YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY PRIVACY. If it is not available for free for $200 - $300 EVERY thing about you is available. Learn to live with a world that has made privacy almost impossible.

Very interesting discussion. Thanks for the info!

Calm down folks. This site doesn't have any "private" info. They just gather public info and consolidate it in one spot.

You can find out the same information about someone by spending 10 minutes on Google.

The worst thing you can do is go on the site and tell them who you are. Why? Because even if you use a disposable email address you are still giving them your IP address. Which they can then sell to marketers to identify you across the web.

If you're concerned about online security then stop using facebook and stuff. Or at least don't use your real name!! Common sense.

never use your real name...even on Facebook I am anonymous wink Hell, my cousin didn't friend me for months because she didn't figure out it was me...of course she didn't read the message that accompanied the request smile

Where Intelligent Legislation Would Be Useful

Sites like Spokeo and ALL its ilk should be required to identify where THEY got the info--every last piece--if you establish yourself as the individual about whom they've collected data, regardless how [in]accurate the data. A law akin to the government mandated (not the commercial sites) method to obtain a free credit report annually would serve well.

If you don't want some (or all) of your personal info publicized, it should be easy to know where else to go to assert your right to keep your information confidential--not just get it stopped every time another Intelius, Spokeo, or other information aggregator comes along.

The way Intelius has swallowed up it's competitors over the years, Spokeo may only be hoping for an eventual buyout as well, but people should not surrender their right to privacy just because info is easily obtainable--free or otherwise.

Spokeo Info

I found my info there, but some of it is incorrect. My Facebook privacy settings are pretty tight. I'm not overly worried about this site - at least not right now.

THANKS FOR THE INFO, I ALSO

This is the reason that I posted the link. Awareness! This is one of the newest sites selling personal information with out any accountability. Think of the things that could happen with the wrong information posted about you. Many people take something posted on the internet as gospel. This site has a Class Action lawsuit file against it for unfair credit reporting (ref; Wikipedia). I too feel that laws need to be passed and enforced against posting wrong information. Unfortunately, to many people just blow it off as you can see by the reaction of a few here. If you have ever had bad info posted about you in a credit report, you can lose the purchase of a new home or car, and it is not an easy to get the bad info removed. A lot of the time the bad info will remain for years on your credit report with a note stating that the info is in dispute. As I stated before, you do with this info as you see fit. We need laws to protect us against companies like this.

A Follow-Up

Just to see if my information magically came back, I decided to go back to this site. It's been a few weeks since I requested removal of my information. The information was removed as soon as I requested it and, as of a few minutes ago, has not reappeared.

I tried in vain removing

I tried in vain removing myself using a .net anonymity email address my broadband company provides. spokeo just kept looping me; I'd enter the required data on the privacy page, get an email sent to my anonymity email address that, when I clicked on it, just took me back to the original privacy page. Why do I have to fight to get my personal info URL removed? spokeo built it without my permission and should respond to my wish to take it down.

UPDATE: I emailed the customer service people and they took down the URL containing my info in 24 hours.

spokeo

no more security for the average person, scary stuff.

No one I know is on there

Seems to be missing a lot of info now. Maybe people discovered the site and had themselves removed or something.

The old pay for public information ploy

It is a come-on to get you to pay for information that can be found for free.

I bet when you do a search for your name, etc they will use those as keywords to do a specific search for information about that name, phone number etc. to see what they might have missed.

That would identify you a lot more specifically than them seeing your IP address (which changes over time anyway).
