Using POI Factory POIs with CoPilot Live for Android (and maybe other smartphones)

CoPilot Live is an increasingly popular "real roadtrip GPS" tool for iPhone and Android--and, aside from programs preinstalled, is the cheapest alternative other than Google Maps or some of the OpenStreetMaps-compatible tools (CoPilot Live USA is $4.99 in the Android Market and Apple App Store, and CoPilot Live North America (which also covers Canada and Mexico) is $19.99 in both Market and App Store).

One of the niftier features that would definitely put CoPilot Live on the radar for folks here at POI-Factory--at least for Android users--is (ironically) an undocumented feature--it turns out that CoPilot Live can use TomTom .ov2 files natively as custom POI files. (Which is just gravy for us POI-Factory regulars--the default format here are CSV postings--which include TomTom .ov2 files.)

In fact, out of all of the options for Android for "real GPS" tools--with the possible exception of the OEM-only Garmin for Android on the Garminphone--CoPilot Live is by far the easiest GPS tool for Android to load custom POIs on--no conversion necessary!

To my knowledge, the iPhone doesn't have this feature yet--but ALK claims their laptop version doesn't either, while people have successfully used this method to get custom POIs onto CoPilot Live for PCs; it MAY work with iPhone, it never hurts to try it out. smile

To get the files into CoPilot Live is surprisingly easy:

a) Connect your phone as an external hard drive to your computer. (With Android phones, hook up the USB cable, it should automatically ask if you want to turn on USB storage. It will then show up as an additional drive.)

b) Go to the \copilot\NA\North America\save folder (I use the North America version--if you just got the US version, it may be something like \copilot\NA\United States\save, it does vary between versions of CoPilot; it'll be in the general format of \copilot\(continent two-letter abbreviation)\(your country or map set)\save.)

c) Copy your .ov2 (and if you have an icon file, the icon) to this directory and disconnect your phone by pressing "Turn Off USB Storage".)

d) Start up CoPilot Live. It will immediately pop up stating that a new POI set has been found. Click the next arrow (to the right), and you can either select a preexisting category or select "New Category" for really custom POIs and click next.

e) Select "No" for "are you importing safety camera data?", then click "next".

It should then gracefully import all your POIs. These will show up in a custom category under Settings -> Manage POIs--so you can turn them on and off at your leisure.

To add safety cameras and redlight cameras (if you are windmill-endowed as an active user) is just a bit different:

a) As these are in plain CSV format, you need to convert them to a TomTom .ov2 file using your favourite application. (I like ITN Converter or Extra_POI_Editor, but others like POIEdit or online conversion tools. Your mileage may vary--use what works best for you.)

b) Copy the newly minted .ov2 file EXACTLY the same as in steps a)-d) in the first section. Click "New Category", enter "Cameras", and click next; pick the image that looks like the camera and click next.

c) Answer "YES" to "Are you importing safety camera data?" and click "next".

That will nicely import the safety camera data.

If you decide you need to edit or delete sets of data, you can go into Settings -> Manage POIs (in the main menu) and edit or delete POI sets.

...and that's it! Very simple--as easy as doing it with a "real" GPS.

Update to the above information Adding POI to Android CoPilot

After an updat to my Note 4 the process has changed:

On your computer put the .csv files in Dropbox that you want on CoPilot.
Be sure CoPilot is closed

After the POI is in your dropbox:
Open Dropbox on your phone

Find the file on Dropbox
to the right of the file name there is a down arrow in a circle
Click on this down arrow

Scroll down to Export and select it

Another menu opens
At the top of the menu is "Save to device"
This is your phone

In the left upper corner click the bars and another menu opens.
On mine I have -- Recent, Download, and two icons that look like an SD Card. The one with numbers is my SD card and the other has internal. I clicked
SD card
Android
data

In the data file find your copilot file
(mine is com.alk.copilot.namarket.premiumuse)

Select ::
file
NA
save
At the bottom is the file with a save to the right. Click the save, it is now on your SD card)))

Now open CoPilot
If your file is ok, (and sometimes if it isn't) it will show at the top with an arrow to the right.

Click right arrow to accept the file name

Click on New Category at the bottom of screen
Name your new category and click right arrow

Pick your icon and right arrow

No to "not cameras" if they are not the cameras

Click right Arrow

It will now be put in your Points of Interest in CoPilot

When finished go to
New Destination
Points of Interest
More Categories

Now see if you new Category is there.
If not there is some little something wrong with your file. I know this from experience as it happened a lot to me.

Spent all day working it out and saving them to .csv and fixing the header but now I have all my files on my phone. grin

A never ending of always changing my mind.

Hey There!

Hey there, mgarledge! Long time, no see. I've been MIA for a while. grin

I got a new phone but it runs CoPilot on Windows, not Android so I can't dig into my file system. sad

I'm trading off the 38 megapixel Nokia camera for easy POIs .. but as soon as the camera dies .. Android again.

Where have you been hiding?

I used CoPilot when I used the tablet but now that I have a Note 4 I am using it all the time. I tried all the other maps but CoPilot was the only one I could put all my POIs in and I can save routes. That was the major factor as to why I am trying to use CoPilot again.

I loved Viago the best because it was more like my Nuvi but with no ability to add POIs and the fact they quit supporting it I knew it was only time till Android updated to a system would cause it to not work correctly.

So, back to CoPilot...

First - Welcome Back from MIA Status!

Assuming the phone is a Lumia 1020 (I LOVE that phone) but am using my Lumia 1520 because of the 6" screen.

That's one of the negatives for custom POI's, in that there isn't a way to have them on a Windows Phone. I still play with CoPilot Live on my old iPhone 4S and an Android phone.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled forum - already in progress . . .

Yup, 1020

Yeah, it's a 1020 and I love it too!
Not a fan of AT&T's price structure but my 2 year contract just expired and they sent me an unlock code - so I think I'm going to try Consumer Cellular for a while. They use the same exact network for voice & data and aside from a few places that I won't have 3rd party data coverage, CC's prices are about half of AT&T's. What's not to like? grin
