New Garmin won't update

so I got a new Nuvi 3760LMT for xmas... plugged it in to my computer, as I used to do with my nuvi 680, and got prompted for a software update. all seemed to run fine, but when I restarted the GPS, and plugged it in again, came back with the same software update needed.
tried it a few times, same result.
also tried it with the Webupdater..same result, although the webupdater at leaset provided feedback during the process, but same result.

trying to update the maps, got a server error.. 500 something.

I suspect it's an issue with the garmin website, but wondered if anyone else has this issue.

and BTW, trying to submit a help ticket to Garmin... also resulted in a server error.

Garmin website could be overloaded with customer demand

Many people have received a new Garmin for Christmas today and are doing the same thing as you. It could be that the site can't handle all the demand without errors.

I wish I had gotten a new Garmin!

Until you have updated the firmware/software on the 37xx you may be running into a bug in these units that can only be fixed with the latest update. Sort of a 'catch 22'.

Anyway, try Webupdater again to get the latest firmware/software update. Once Webupdater completes the update PULL THE USB CABLE OUT OF THE NUVI, don't do a Safely Remove Hardware in Windows. Then restart the Nuvi and it should complete the update.

The bug in earlier firmware for the 37xx was that doing a safely remove resulted in no changes being written to the Nuvi's internal storage drive. Pulling the cable and everything worked as it should. The latest firmware update fixed this problem so once you have the new firmware installed you can go back to doing a 'safely remove' which of course is the safer way.

.

Also note that after the update, you need to unplug the unit from the USB port, then allow it to power-cycle which then will install the update. The PC only transfers the update file to the nuvi. Then nuvi itself then updates the firmware.

If you don't unplug the nuvi from the PC and keep checking for updates, it will keep finding the same updates because the unit has not yet updated itself. All updates occur after a power-cycle.

Problem with website

The "HTTP Error 500" must be a website problem. I was getting the same message when I tried to update my just-purchased map update. I was able to finally update the software (yes, I had to unplug the USB cable, and watch the GPS "loading update" message for a couple of minutes). But when I tried downloading the map update, all I got was the "HTTP..." error. Today, I have had no luck at all getting into the Garmin support webpage. The main website seems to work, just not the "myGarmin" page.

It may be correct that the website is overloaded with people updating their newly acquired Garmins.

Website

I'm also having a problem registering and updating my Garmin. I may wait and try again later.

success, I think

So i finally, it's after 10pm here, got the website to respond and did the software update, pulled the plug, and lo and behold, the software updated.
now to see if I can get the map update to load.

thanks for the tip.

Website working now...

This morning (day after christmas) it seems to be working fine. I'm in the process now of downloading the map update. I just hope we don't lose power, we have 6" of snow on the ground and it is still falling. Very unusual for this area.

its that time of the year

Still having problems

My 1490 won't acquire satellites at all. My settings get erased every time I power the unit off then back on. I did get my product registered and updated after a couple hours of frustration. Still won’t find satellites. My new unit is going back to Costco.

Satellites

Don't give up yet!

If you are turning it on inside a building, it can't see the satellites. Turn it on outside and leave it in one place in an open area with a clear view of the sky for a half hour. This will likely solve the problem.

If not, report back and we will tell you what to do next.

Still Having Problems

I was having a similar problem with the 1450, which is replacing my 660.

I stood outside for a bit and it finally did hook up. Then all of the settings stayed. I think the garmin needs to make an initial satellite connection to establish your home location and then the settings stay.

Thanks

Thanks very much. I have had two other GPS's in the past and never had to wait long. I'll give it a try and let you know. I did go outside for a few minutes but maybe it wasn't long enough.
Thanks again

It's working

I did what you said and it appears to be working O.K. It sure did take a long time to pick up the satellites the first time.
Thanks

Satellite acquisition

Thanks

I've had units that would pick up the satellites within five minutes from the first time I turned them on. (C-330's and 340's seemed to acquire quickly.) On other units, it has taken as long as 15-20 minutes. Sometimes you just have to be patient.

working fine now

ok, so with the heavy load on garmin on christmas eve and morning, coupled with the bug outlined for me, I'm up and running. even the traffic software updated once I got it in the car and was out on the road.

now i'm off to find a nice little case for my new nuvi 3760...

Thanks to all who helped or offered suggestions.

long time because...?

I think it takes a long time the first time, because it tried to look for the last satellites it had contact with. So if the GPS is a few hundred or more miles away, it's looking for satellites that aren't visible. finally gives up on those and starts listening for others, that it eventually finds. sometimes, I've found my old unit to take longer than usual, especially if I turned it off on one side of town, and didn't turn it back on until a few days later on the other side of town.

or when i fly and fire it up in another state.... takes longer then too.

Yes that happened to me

Yes that happened to me several times through the years and I could never figure it out. I would shut off the garmin and then go to a different city and it would take forever to lock on. Thanks for the tip.

that 500 server error drove

that 500 server error drove me crazy xmas eve lol. it's downloading now with the Garmin Map Update v2.5.16 that I just downloaded. Taking hours to update, but it's working smile

Happy with my new 1490 GPS

I used it today and it worked perfectly. Locks on satellites quickly now. I updated the unit yesterday and will do maps in the next couple of days.
Thanks everyone for your help.
