Works Better than Google

charlesd45 wrote:

The Mapquest implementation works FAR better than Google. But I noticed that it truncates the state and zip code. So after it's downloaded to my Nuvi, it shows the address, city, comma and nothing after that. At least the interface works logically. It opens a popup to let you select the GPS, and then closes the popup after it's done.

Google takes you to a entirely different web page and when you are finished, it returns you to the full US map instead of where you started. And you have to search all over again to get back to where you were.

Now if we could just take the best features of each one and combine them..... wink

I noticed that you are able

I noticed that you are able to send to your Garmin, routes or destinations. Since I have a Nuvi 680, which does not save routes, shall I assume that you can not save a route or destination from mapquest to my 680? Wonder what would happen if you try to send a route to my 680.

Map Quest

Well I just tested Mapquest vs Google and found there are some differences. I searched 25 locations and Google found them all...Mapquest 21. I find both sites are fairly simple to use but whatever works for one person may not for the other.

Nuvi 750 and loving it...

Nüvi 3xx

johnc wrote:

John, I think the only data you are seeing on the Nüvi 350, is the contents of the name. Maybe in the your example, they'd put part of the address in the name? Are you seeing the longitude, latitude that the 3xx displays in the absence of other data?

I looked at the .gpx file it produced: they've tried to cater for as many Garmins as possible, by duplicating the address into the <desc> field. Unfortunately, it needs to be in the <cmt> field for the 3xx, so both lots of data are getting ignored. If you edit the file, before rebooting the Nüvi (ie change the tags); you get the information, but in a rather unruly 'splurge', because there's no formatting markup.

Too bad it can't be sent to Traffic Receiver

Too bad the GPS has to be tethered to a computer for this to work. Maybe someday we'll be able to send it to our GPS devices via traffic receiver similar to MSN's feature where you can send favorites.

mapquest works better with my c340, adds all the info where google doesn't.

No you only have to connect the GPS to the computer when you are ready to send data .

MapQuest Route to Nuvi 750

Just tested this. Works great.
Create route in MapQuest, sent xxxx.gpx file to my 750, import file and result shows up in the "Routes" category.

Google maps does not have "routes" working yet....

That was good should of had that when they first released the link. It makes it more understanable.
It would have been better had they showed loading the communator on also so people didn't have so much trouble.

Mapquest is ready to send

Mapquest is ready to send routes? I may have to take a look at that. Really been enjoying the Google send POI feature.

Google works good-Mapquest doesn't

I got the download favorites(Waypoints) using Google Maps working with no trouble.

But when I try to use Mapquest I find the point and then cllick on the SEND Icon then on Send to GPS and nothing happens. If I say Send to Cell it brings up another page to enter the appropriate data need to send to a cell phone.

So that the send to cell works but not GPS.

Garmin Communicator is loaded and working.

ANY IDEAS?

Dunno - I've been messing with the main Mapquest.com site (no sign at all of this feature on Mapquest.co.uk). The location I was using, was "EPCOT, Orlando, FL" - which it seemed to understand smile

Btw - the page it's trying to open is: http://www.mapquest.com/controller/mainui/gps?popup

which gives [object Error] if you try to open it manually yourself - maybe because of the missing cookie info?

Google vs MapQuest -

I don't care if it does take me to another page, I like google better. MapQuest does not let me add a name or phone number - may be available later. Google brings me back to the exact spot I was on when I return to the map after sending to my GPSr - so - Google Maps it is for me.

Mapquest

I am able to download POI's to my 750 from Mapquest. I sent the POI for Epcot Center Merchandise and it showed up in MY Favorites....I also downloaded a route which I see in the Garmin GPX file but can't find a way to bring it up..When I go to routes in the menu it says there are none. Garmin is checking and going to call me back....

NUVI 750

I have to go to "My Data" and then import the route, it then goes to Routes on the 750. I did it this morning and worked fine. Then you also able to delete it when you don't need it anymore.

Straight to SD Card

I liked that I could send the file straight to my SD card without having to have the garmin connected. Can't seem to get googlemaps to do that unless card is in the garmin.(maybe I'm missing something). Mapquest seems faster downloading.

Google vs Mapquest

I agree. I like the ability in Google to zoom in/out with the map wheel and to drag any point along the route to change it. Unfortunately, Google only does single points at this time. I assume uploading routes will be available in the future.

I also noticed that Mapquest routes will get changed once loaded into my 750. Apparently, the route is recalculated by Garmin's own algorithm using its current preferences (fastest vs. shortest, etc.) after the route is imported.

You're right - They stuffed the address into the name field. It's all in a large font. Then it shows the coords in a smaller font underneath.

Strange - If I load current.gpx into GeePeeEx it's all in the name field but I don't see the coords anywhere. I can type a longer name than what was sent from Mapquest and it saves OK. So Mapquest is just dropping the state and zip when it transfers. But then the coords are gone when I call it up on the Nuvi. Oh well, it's still a lot easier to get locations into the Nuvi this way than manual entry.

It sends WAYPOINTS to the GPS unit. And it sends routes to GPS units that support stored routes.

Send to GPS not working?

I see from the comments that the feature isn't working for everyone. While this is the first release of this feature on MapQuest, we would like to improved on it in future releases. Constructive feedback as well as specific information (screenshots, javascript errors, etc) would be helpful in building this feature out.

Please contact me at mattbrewer1@gmail.com and I'll do my best to address any issues you have.

BTW - I use a Garmin to geocache with and pushed very hard (sometimes too hard) to get this released on the site because I know its a feature I'd use all the time. Now if only I could get Garmin to give me a Nuvi... wink

Send to GPS not working

I downloaded a route to my 750 and it showed up in my GPX file but not in my current routes. Garmin told me it is not fully functionable yet. Don't know if they even know what they are talking about....It will download though but can't bring it up in routes.

Creating routes

When I try to make a route to download I notice it only will work from a Business Address to a Business address.

Is this the correct way it's suppose to work?

If I try to make a route from my hone address to a Business Address it fails to work.

I have found a workaround for this if anyone else is haveing the same problem.

When you say it shows up in your GPX file do you mean the one on the NUVI drive?

If so then those routes can be found under the MY DATA screen under the "IMPORT ROUTE FROM FILE"

You have to import it into your ROUTES page.

Just remember you can only have 10 active routes in your ROUTES page. If you allready have 10 there you will have to delete one first befor you can import a new one.

Do you have to do that

Do you have to do that everytime you create a new route or just when you download on from Mapquest? Just got mine so I am still learning.

Thanks

--
Bobby....Garmin 2450LM

Downloading routes

Anytime you download a route into the Garmin Nuvi made from Garmins MapSource, MapQuest or any other external source it will allways be put into the MY DATA. The only way to be able to use that route is to IMPORT it from MY DATA into the working ROUTES page.

You can have alot (limited by available memory) of routes in MY DATA.

They will stay there after you have imported then into the working ROUTES page. This way once you have used that route you can delete it from the working Routes page making room for any other route you may need from MY DATA. If you ever need that route again it is still in MY DATA and only needs to be re-imported back into the working ROUTES page.

.

I haven't had any problems sending routes that didn't involve business addresses. I created a route from my home address to my sister's home address and sent it to my Zumo without any problems.

Users do need to be aware as has been pointed out above that once you send the route to your unit, you must IMPORT the route on the unit before it will show up on the list of routes.

Opening gpx file from Mapquest in garmin

I have a Germin nuvi625T and successfully sent a mapquest route to it. Plugged to my computer I see the file is there in the GPX folder. But I cannot discover how to open that route with the nuvi.

nuvi265T MY DATA does not offer import route from file

My nuvi265T MY DATA does not offer import route from file. How can I get that?

nuvi 265T

does not have advanced routing function (creating, saving, importing, editing and optimizing multi-point routes). To import routes from Mapquest, you would need to get a different nuvi model such as a 765T or 1490T.
