lifetime maps

Finally broke down and bought lifeime maps for Garmin. Now I really have to make sure I don't lose this unit. I wish it was my lifetime and not the unit's.

I wish that too...

My last Garmin was an old, old StreetPilot III.

Back in those day, if you buy the map update, you could at least share with another Garmin unit. Now, the life time is just the life of the "Support period" of the unit. That is, a few years after the model been discontinued. If you take good care of your GPS, and is still functioning after a long time, you are still out of luck.

life time of the "support period:?

My understanding is for as long as your units is functioning, you will be able to get updates. Where did you get your version of "life time" definition?

Lifetime

From Garmin site.

¹If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime™ subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive up to four (4) map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for one (1) compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter.

I know someone whose

I know someone whose purchased the Garmin Lifetime Mapupdates and his unit could not be repaired by Garmin after sending the unit into them, he then purchased a new Garmin unit and was able to transfer the lifetime update to this new unit. From what I understand this is a standard policy as long as the unit cannot be repaired.
