Sensors

I travel up and down I-95 from Maryland to Philadelphia everyday and started to notice what looks like to me is a sign post that over hangs over the highway. But on the part that is above the road it looks like two sensors of some kind, I also seen some on poles that are straight up and these sensors (dont know what else to call them)are pointing torwards the road. Does anyone know what they are?

Visibility ???

Could be for weather (visibility)?

Ask a trucker?

I never checked into them to really see what they are, but have wanted to. But somehow I think they are for trucking. I think they have something to do with tracking hazardous cargo maybe. I've seen more & more of them pop up since 9-11 (but time & technology marches on anyway), and I think I've seen some cryptic references to (maybe them) near permanent weigh stations.

Also, my son in law used to be a US Capitol police officer and he has mentioned some new-tech ways to monitor hazardous cargo.

I think I've seen them on I70 west of Frederick as well.

When someone finds out for sure, post it here, I'll do the same but I've got a lot going on today.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

They appear to be

Could be them

camerabob- I have seen a few like some of the ones in the links, but the ones I've noticed that I thought were for trucks (probably wrong) were box-like rectangular, with sort of tapered sides to them. Maybe I'll get a chance to Google search a bit later.

I'm on the east coast, btw.. suburbs of DC (where we see a LOT of funny stuff!) .. and hear even more from that odd building on the hill, with the dome at the end of the mall. wink

I hear ya.

I'm a New Yorker that does a bunch of interstate driving myself. I have seen the units you're referring to on I-81 and I-95, usually near the truck weigh stations. They look like camera housings, but have no lens window... They are aimed slightly downward towards oncoming traffic on the right hand shoulder.

the ones you describe are

The ones you describe are part of the system for handling trucks. They are tied to WIM - Weigh in Motion - detectors that weigh a truck while at speed. A transducer (like EZPass) is read and when the truck gets to the next point in the system a signal is sent back telling them if they have to stop.

Any day you don't learn something new is a wasted day...

What was posted is lat/lon and most on here think in lon/lat.

poles

yes thats it and within the same area there is one overhead, What is it?

I believe they are what

I believe they are what camerabob posted above. They are traffic counters. The bottom one is pointed at the SB lanes and the top one points over to the NB lanes.
This link that camerabob gave, gives a good description

antennas for truck transponders

Out here on the Left Coast, at least in places where the weather stays mild, they don't have to put the antennas in protective enclosures.

Nuvi 2460, 680, DATUM Tymserve 2100, Trimble Thunderbolt, Ham radio, Macintosh, Linux, Windows

Also Called PrePass In Some Areas

They communicate with equipment in the truck which tells the driver if he is permitted to skip a weigh station or not.

Once weighed, and for a certain time thereafter (to preclude reloads) the PrePass system will acknowledge that this truck and load has already been processed elsewhere up the road. The driver sees a signal/display on his dashboard or instrument cluster that tells him he may continue.

It also tells the highway patrol if he's bypassing the weigh station inappropriately, and "tags" the trucks transponder allowing the local LEO to home right in on the offender.
