Solar Flares

Seeing talk in other threads, thought I's start one on this subject.

Here is an article covering how flares impact GPSrs. And if you want to keep up to date on things like geomagnetic storms, flare activity, and potential to see 'Northern Lights' - visit spaceweather.com.

Web Sites to look at

SEC Navigation Systems GPS Page has a link to estimated 3-hour planetary K-index, which is a level of geomagnetic activity - when this is 7, intermittent satellite navigation and low-frequency radio navigation problems may occur, HF radio may be intermittent, and aurora has been seen as low as Illinois and Oregon (typically 50° geomagnetic lat.)**.

The SEC's Media page has links to a plethora of information made available to the media, and background info that some might find informative.
