Speaker Clarity and Volume

Recently, when looking to replace my lost/stolen nüvi 760, I was surprised to find that none of the new units offered a line-out jack to allow using the unit through a car stereo. It leads me to wonder how the volume/clarity of these new units compares to my older 760.

The 760 could be used without going through the car system but it was vastly superior when used in conjunction with the car audio. Do the new units have better speakers and offer better audibility when driving in a noisy environment than the older units did?

It seems to me that a unit that can play through the car stereo and will mute the other audio when it gives directions would be greatly superior to one that doesn't offer such ability.

This would seem to make a point in favor of the built-in systems although they seem horribly expensive compared to a unit you can take with you anywhere and use in multiple vehicles.

So................ How IS the audibility of the new units?

My 765T is quite clear

So long as I have the power cord plugged in, I find that my 765T is loud and clear.

I've found that my 1350

I've found that my 1350 isn't nearly as clear as my 660 was. (The screen on the 660 died after 2.5 yrs though, which is why I replaced it). The 1350's not bad, just not nearly as crisp and clear.

Garmin Cheaped Out?

Like you, I was disappointed to watch as Garmin eliminated the line out on newer units. Perhaps they surveyed users and discovered too few were piping the audio out to their vehicle audio system to make it a deal breaker. Maybe they've decided the RF audio output from the GPS to car receiver is good enough (a joke for many users, especially in large cities with lots of broadcast stations).

The good news is, there are still current models with line out, they're just not the most recent ones. I'm guessing you can still find brand new 760s at bargain prices since they're discontinued.

Cheers

They also eliminated the RF out on all models. There seems to be absolutely no way to send the output of the GPS unit through the car stereo system.

As for the nüvi 760 they don't exist as brand new. You can get them as factory refurbs but that's about it. I believe you can still get some 765 units new, though.

I did buy a purported new 760 on eBay a week or so ago. It looks new, the packaging was new, the cables still had the wrapping on them, etc. However, it had been registered previously with Garmin. I sent an email to the seller immediately but got NO reply. Garmin removed the previous registration and registered the unit in my name although it shows as being done quite some time ago.

I've got a Nuvi 1450 and the volume is fine. I keep it at 40% of maximum and have no problem even with the radio going.

1490

is the best, in this area, that i have had from Garmin

Some Garmin models have a

Some Garmin models have a built-in FM transmitter (660, 710 etc) that allows you to use your FM radio to crank the volume of the instructions.

This can be helpful but you lose the ability to listen to your radio stations while driving in this mode.
