Bluetooth in the 660

I haven't connected it to my computer to check for updates for several months. Today when it turned on in the car the 660 went into a "Bluetooth Firmwear Update" all by itself. I find this interesting. Apparently Garmin can communicate with the unit thru satelite. I thought they did this when it was connected to the computer. I haven't had time to check what the Bluetooth firmwear version is now but I will do so. Has this happened before?

Not really

I don't think that update by satellites is done. Satellites are not Garmin property but belongs to US government. And units have only one way communication with satellites. They can receive signals and this is it. If they can send data to satellites then stealing gps will have simple solution: call garmin (on other manufacturer) and they will be able to locate or disable stolen unit. But so far they can do nothing in this area.

As about updates other futures in units. When I bought my garmin it didn't have traffic receiver, but I loaded into unit update for TMC receiver. Visually nothing changed until one day I've bought traffic receiver and connected it. After unit powered up it started to update TMC unit. Just like this, out of the blue. It may work somehow similar with bluetooth. Update can be loaded with update earlier but it was activated by turning of bluetooth or when it detected other bluetooth nearby.

With millions of units in the world, different brands, models it will take huge amount of data to be transferred to each of them. And it will cost gps makers gazillions of $ wink If this will be cheap (read: free for them) I'm sure they will implement update through satellites instead of bothering with internet and computers.

That may be but

since I haven't even connected the thing for a looong time and have been using the Bluetooth, I wonder why and how it picked this time to update firmware.

beats me

Maybe it is this same think I have with firmware update. From time to time it shows on garmins My Dashboard that there is update for my unit firmware. After downloading update to unit there is this same firmware like before but Dashboard show "up to date" for firmware. And after some time it starts again. So I will opt for only logical explanation: it's magic wink

We've a 660, but don't have

We've a 660, but don't have bluetooth enabled...
There were a couple firmware updates that were for bluetooth, but I'm not certain if they installed showing it or not....

I can tell you that if I go into System/About, the versions I see on my 660 is:
Software 4.90
Audio 1.30
GPS 3.00
Bluetooth Version 0.00

Which leads me to believe that until you use it, it doesn't load.....

Make sense?

You Are Correct

That's right. If you don't have bluetooth enabled, the version number displays as 0.00.
