Reading Files (GPX files on PC)

I have both GPX & CSV files on my GPS.
If I plug my GPS into my computer and open the drive, I can click on a CSV file and open it in Excell and see what is on it.
If I click on a GPX file, I get a message that it can't be opened.
Is there a way to open this kind of file to read the information.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Notepad

You can use notepad (or notepad++ a better notepad) or use Extra_POI_Editor available from this site at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21156

Update - You could also use XML Notepad as an alternative: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=...

Unintended Editing

It is possible to make a change by accident while viewing these files. It might be best to make a copy for viewing.

GPS file format conversions

Timandi,

There are so many different GPS formats. Gpsbable.com makes a full time job much easier,,, converting from one format to another. Gpsvisulize.com has a conversion feature that is understandable by at least one person with limited intelligence, ME.

EasyGPS.com can help in lots of cases, but is a bit shy on documentation to my way of thinking.

Please look at the Extra POI Editor written by one of our own members. It is very impressive software

Extra POI Editor

I tried to download this file. I use WinZip to unzip it.
It unzips and when I try to install it, I get a message "missing RICHTX32.OCX" and it will not install.
What am I doing wrong? Usualy never have trouble installing files.

I imagine it has something to do with "rich text"

Needed file

When you download the program if you get message about OCX file missing scroll down on the main page and under troubleshooting you will find the Extra Poi Editor Installer that you will need to download. You will see below message on download screen

Are you missing the required OCX file?

Use the installer instead. You may only have to do this once since this will install all the required files for future releases. This is just an install to get the library files. You should always use the latest version of Extra_POI_Editor.

Extra_POI_Editor_Installer+v470.zip <- Try this one first! It is Windows 7 compatible, but you need to run the install as administrator.
Extra_POI_Editor_Installer+v402.zip <- This one always worked, but will create installation errors on Windows 7. Just keep original drivers if prompted.

do you really? Why?

I have custom POIs loaded on my nuvi that come from both .GPX and .CSV files. But I don't have either type of file on my GPS. When one uses the POI loader program it converts either (or both) of these files into the internal nuvi poi format. So having the .GPX and/or .CSV files on the gps also is a waste of space and not how the device is intended to be used.

You can open either type of file in any text editor. csv files are "comma separated vector" files, they contain a line that is a set of values separated by commas. gpx files are a form of xml files (eXtended markup language), they provide a richer form of passing information into the device than simple dedicated columns of data, but like csv files they are still just text files that can be viewed in any text editor, and looking at some should give you a better feeling for the data that they contain. Unlike csv files, which only take 1 line per POI entry, each POI entry in a gpx file will span multiple lines.

I'll try it

I'll give XML Notepad a try.
