I just found out about the Point Inside for Android earlier this week. I hope to try this at the Mall of America soon. The FAQs state that once this is downloaded, the application can be used without a wireless connection. For others here with Android, what are your favorite GPS applications?
My favourite apps that are GPS-friendly
My favourite GPS programs for Android vary based on what I'm doing and using the GPS for:
a) PointInside is a wonderful tool if you fly frequently or visit malls often--it's a tool I personally use for air travel a good deal, or for malls out of town.
b) If one is into social networking, Foursquare is a pretty decent little tool--especially since some places do give discounts for frequent visitors who register visits via Foursquare.
c) For walking around larger cities and finding where to go--especially if you're using public transport--the best app is also the one that likely came with the Android, namely, Google Maps. (One thing I do like--for larger cities like Chicago, it does have the ability to sniff out the nearest public transportation and to do mapping on how to get somewhere via local bus or metro--driving in Chicago or Washington is a nightmare, rather have the city do it
)
d) ...or if it's late at night and public transportation is skeery in larger cities, there's always Taxi Magic (http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/travel_and_l...) which uses GPS to locate nearby taxi companies (and allow you to reserve a cab to pick you up).
e) For driving (rather than exploring larger cities), my preferred GPS tool is CoPilot Live for Android--in no small part because one can load POIs (in TomTom .ov2 format) from POI-Factory onto the device.
It is a pay app, but it's cheap ($5 in the market, sometimes it can be caught on sale even cheaper) and is worth it IMHO.
f) For geocaching, Geocaching.com's app (http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/entertainmen...) is a bit more expensive (at $10 in the Market, though again, you can often find it on sale) but is one of the definitely more complete applications for geocaching out there--it certainly integrates the best with existing geocaches in the geocaching.com database. (A good free alternative would be GeoBeagle.)
g) For orienteering, Orienteer (http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/travel_and_l...) does the job very well, and is free
h) And finally, GPS Essentials (http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/gps-es...) is a nice tool to check out the general performance of your Android's GPS (including meter fixes, etc.).
