Looks like a good unit for the $, even with the low volume problem.

Use TTSVoiceEditor

You can use TTSVoiceEditor to fix the low volume on this device. I picked up a cheap GTM 20 power cord for traffic from Ebay and now I have traffic enabled on this device too. This is really a good buy. i love the Voice recognition on this device, so no need to fiddle with the GPS while driving.

Yes but how can us Canadians take advantage of this offer?

Wow

Wow, why did I buy mine earlier? Oh well.

As another has reported, the low volume issue can be corrected.

However, from my experiences (even after battery-removed reboots and a hard reset) as well as from others, the 855 (maybe all the 8x5 models) has issues with random reboots and freeze ups more often than other Garmin models--and if you prefer a TTS voice other than Jill, each random reboot returns Jill to the speaker's platform.

I agree with the previous

I agree with the previous poster. This unit crashes and freezes more than any GPS I have ever owned. I work as a hot shot courier so I use my 855 a lot every day. I search for at least 20 locations per day and sometimes more. When the GPS works it is excellent but when it starts to crash it does so often. Freezes seem to come in bunches but crashes always happen when I'm searching for a new location when I'm alreay following a route. I think it overloads the processor. It doesn't happen all the time but is still too much for me. I've gone months without a crash or freeze then can have 20 or more in one week. They can happen at any time and not just when using certain functions. I believe a lot of the freezes are due to overheating so I try to keep an air conditioner vent blowing on the unit on hot days. I seem to have less freezes that way. The worst is on long deliveries out of town in places where I've never been. The unit will just freeze and if I'm not paying attention I won't notice it till I'm miles from the last turning spot. My advice is to stick with an older unit such as a 205W. I have an old 200W that never crashed or froze but it doesn't have all the features I need for work.

I highly recommend this unit

I highly recommend this unit. I had both a 855 and a 885T and used them many times for around town and on extended trips. The voice recognition was my favorite feature.

My son now has my old 885T and loves it.

Not great reviews on amazon

I don't think I have seen so many bad reviews for a Garmin unit.

As was stated above, it probably accounts for the low price.

Tempting at this price despite the mixed reviews

Garmin Discontinued it.

Looks like Garmin is releasing some new models in 2200 and 2300 series.

If it has the Microsoft Direct, the service is being discontinued 1/2012. http://direct.msn.com/

I would pass up the deal since I have owned 2 brand new 855's and the problems are not worth the price. Constant re-booting, black outs screens, sloooow response. Biggest headache that Garmin has produced!

855

I have had my 855 since Dec. 2009 and haven't had any of the problems described in the earlier posts in this thread. The only problem I have had is finding it with a completely dead battery if I don't use it for a few days (sleep mode drains it after 5 or 6 days). It then takes a few minutes charging in the cradle before it will turn on, and then when it does boot up, I often have to put the voice back to Jill. In my opinion, the 855 for $100 is a super bargain.

I have owned a 885t for 6 months or so now. I bought it rebuilt from Amazon for about $200. It has never frozen up or done anything else requiring the battery to be pulled. I also own a 760. I think the 885t is a little more finicky - like voice commands do not always work - but it is pretty reliable. It is also a little annoying that it doesn't work the same as the 760. I play MP3s from both units and the 760 will start playing what I was listening to before I shut the car down but the 885t will remember what you were listening to but not start playing it until you tell it to. But you can do it with voice commands (music player, play, display map). Voice commands work from anywhere, you do not have to be on the right screen. The bluetooth is nice in the 885t, the 855 does not have this, otherwise they seem to have the same features. For $100, the 855 is a steal.

When MSN goes away you can use a different traffic antenna with the 8 series. I paid for lifetime traffic on my 760 and have already tried using the power cord/antenna on the 885t and it works fine. So it will cost more to keep this functional but it can be done. The MSN is great, however. Not only does it do traffic but it also gives gas prices, movie times, weather (including radar images), etc..

It's a great deal for a

It's a great deal for a GARMIN unit. Except it was discontinued. Even great for a gift.

Wow, that sounds like an awesome deal, but I LOVE my c530. I really need to see some hi-tech stuff before I change.

Still thinking

I'm on the edge of buying. All I need is a few more good reviews. grin

This is the Amazon Gold Box deal of the day

This is the Amazon Gold Box deal of the day and ends when sold out or the end of the 1 day time limit whichever comes first. Tomorrow will be to late to get the deal.

The 855 does not come with a traffic receiver just a power vehicle cable but will work with the same traffic receiver that comes with a 760, c550 or other similar units.

Hmm

I don't think Garmin had Canadians in mind when they made this with speech recognition. EH does not count as a word in the software smile

All kidding aside, can you not order from the US site? Or does it automatically direct you towards the canadian site? There was a time I wanted to order a Samsung monitor and it was only available through a Canadian best buy site, I had no luck buying it.

bad units?

I'm glad to hear that some of you have been lucky with the 855. But the majority of 855 owners have not been lucky. When I was on the phone with Garmin the level 2 tech told me that they got tons of calls on this unit. The Linux operating system on this unit was not at all reliable. Go to a search engine such as Google and input "Garmin 855" and "freeze". It will return over 3,000 hits! I have owned every major brand sold and have been a loyal Garmin user for over 10 years but this is their only unit I will not recommend. Best of luck to the new buyers!
