New expressions

I’m using a Garmin 255w GPS and having trouble in changing a phrase . Here’s what I have done. See if you can follow.

I open my TTS Voice editor. Select open. Select computer , M drive (Garmin GPS file) then voice file. Scroll down to (English American Samantha)open and double click #68 (Recalculating) Type in new phrase and select OK. This changes # 68 from Recalculating to my new phrase. I click save. I then get a dialog box that I am about to save my modified voice file. To use original file name for this to work. Hit OK. Type in original file name (English American Samantha2.vpm)into the file name box. I added a 2 to tell them apart. That puts the file into the GPS files but I can’t find it to select it on the voice settings.

I have also tried coping the Garmin voice file to my computer, opened voice editor, changed the expression, saved the file, renamed it and then dragged it to my Garmin voice files. No matter what when I turn off route it still says recalculating. I going nuts. What in the world am I doing wrong. Help

This is how the file name

This is how the file name shows on my 265. English_American_Samantha.vpm .Why don't you just make a copy of the original voice file and save on your computer. If you done a backup you already have it.Then run voice editor and make changes and when you get to save just highlight the original file to overwrite it with the change one with no typing needed. You will have the backup on computer if you need it later.

You can't change the original file name. It has to stay the same. As previous poster suggested copy original file to your computer as a back-up, and name the modified file English_American_Samantha.vpm.

If he clicks on the orginial

If he clicks on the orginial file name in the save mode it will overwrite the orginial and he will not have to type anything.Less chance of a mistake that way.

I have edited "Jack", changing "recalculating", among other stuff. Just save the original to a safe place on the computer, make another copy and edit that, using the same file name, make whatever changes you want, except for the few cryptic ones near the bottom. It has to work if you do this, and like I said, use the same file name as the original because I think that it has to work with another file already on your unit. Least, I used the same file name. Then, when you are happy with it, just copy it back to the voice directory on the unit. BTW, Garmin has a program that will allow you to create a voice, using your own, or anyone else of your choosing. Wont do street names though.

TTSVoiceEditor

Correct: you have to save to the same file name otherwise it will not work. You need also to copy the modified file back to the GPS to overwrite the existing VPM file.

Keeping a copy of the original VPM is also a good idea if you want to restore the original phrases to your GPS.

New Expressions

Thanks you and the others or your replies. Things seem to go well following the directions given and now my new phrase shows up in the the #68 slot(recalculating). Only trouble is my device still says "rcalculating". What could cause that?

A few tips

Make sure to copy the modified VPM file back to your GPS in the Garmin/Voice folder.

Make sure not to rename the VPM file. Keep the same file name.

@charlesd45, not sure I remember what you are referring to. It's may be because it's Friday night and I have a kid buzzing in my ears... smile

Remember when the 2x5 models

Remember when the 2x5 models and others came out. They have different voice set up.Not like Jill etc on other models.Voice Editor would make the change but it would not work.I contacted you by email and several others reported it.You did make a change. Not sure now what it was but after the change no problems. You may remember this statement you made at the time. You will no longer have this problem in the future.

It also could be the OP when he makes the change he is not going back and saving it.

New Expressions

I downloaded the latest voice editor (2.85) and tried again. It worked. I don't know if I finally did it right or it was the new voice editor. No matter, it works. Now I am free to find something else to get stuck on. I want to thank everyone who answered. You were a really big help and I hope down the road I will be able to help someone too. Thanks again grin
