Never see 3D buildings on my 765t

I am suppose to have 3D building detail on my 765t, but after having my unit for over a year, have never seen it. Anybody know where you have to go to see it? Dont see where you turn it on or off either. I have been all over NC, Charlotte, and big cities up in the NW. Minneapolis, would surely have it. Lane assist is real good there. I havent really cared much about lane assist, but my unit has never displayed the first 3D building, and would just like to know why it isnt working. I have all the updates, including the one that fixed the screen interpretation errors. Thanks!

Well...

Check your settings. You have to use 3D view in the first place. Second, make sure you have the 3D option checked in maps.

I use 2D exclusively myself, and haven't had a need for it yet. It may be cool though!

In my 755T same story about

In my 755T same story about 3D, never seen.

Location?

"Large buildings in major cities have been digitized and they're shown with a photo-realistic exterior texture mapped onto a 3D representation."

Besides the internal settings of the GPS you have to be in an area that has been digitized.

Try setting your location for NY City and see if you get any effects.

3d view and maps are set

My 3D maps and view is, and has been set. Been simulating in NYC, still no 3D buildings. The GPS works great otherwise, and lane assist is wonderful in big cities, but never see 3D buildings. Havent been able to find any help by googling for it either. I just now simmed to St. Johns Episcopal Church in NYC, and still no 3D buildings anywhere. Maybe a missing file or something. Maybe me and the 755 user are the only ones who are denied usage of the 3d feature? ;-0

I not sure, I put my garmin back in my truck. I tried changing the view distances. Makes no difference. Til today, I didnt really care about 3d buildings, but it is suppose to work, and it is a perty neat feature I guess. My unit is out of warranty, so I dont know if tech support would be of any help or not.

3D and Juncion View

I have never seen 3D either and until my recent trip to Canada, I had not seen Junction View. I do not go into NYC regularly so I do not see the 3D views for that location. Here on Long Island, none of the areas I have traveled so far have Junction View. It was quite a surprise traveling on the 401 in Ontario and suddenly seeing the JV appear for the first time. Later on, back in New York, I saw it again in Tarrytown, NY on the New York State Thruway.

I see them in Downtown Toronto. Last month I was in Vancouver, BC. While driving around in Vancouver downtown, it displayed lots of building in 3D.

I did not see any Junction View in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver. It works in Toronto very well.

I see that you're using a map version four versions old. The new map is 2011.20. As new maps come out, more junction views, lane assists and probably more 3D views are added. Back when nuvis added the ability to show posted speed limits, it seemed pretty useless since only interstate highways had data that could be displayed. But the next map update put speed limits on a majority of streets. It's possible that your 2010.20 map has a much smaller quantity of 3D views available than the new maps which explains the differences in what folks are reporting here are seeing. It'd be nice if we could compare the file size that holds the 3D views from the 2010 and 2011 maps to see how different they are.

Try this

groundhog wrote:

How to enable Screen Shots
Touch Tools (Wrench) > Settings > Display > Screen Shot > Enable

How to enable 3D view
Touch Tools (Wrench) > Settings > Maps and select 3D

How to get to Empire State Building
Touch Where To? > Near > A Different City > OK
then, type in “New York” and select New York, NY

then, use down arrow to find Attractions, and All Attractions
then, touch Spell and type in “Empire State Building” and Done.
then, select Empire State Building
then, touch Map
Then zoom in using the “+” button until you see the building in 3D

Your point about my old maps is well taken. And, you are very observant for noting my older maps. Still, right off the shelf, my 765 was suppose to have 3d view, but it has never worked. grin cool

My unit always auto zoom in as I approach the downtown area and then the 3D buildings come in view.

WORKS VERY WELL in the DFW AREA as do the junction view feature.

There may be reasons why Garmin does not want you to be looking at screenshots on the GPS itself. Safety perhaps.

One of the reasons for screenshots is for the user to be able to re-create some situation. Perhaps, I notice an error in the map and want to be able to show what Garmin had vs. what say Google maps has.

You are correct that enabling screenshot is not persistent like other option settings. I am not sure whether or not I personally would want to have the screenshot active everytime I turn the unit on, but some other person might.

Nuvi 765T

LMChu, since you have a 765T, I wonder if you would check a set of instructions for me. In the process you will get to see some 3D buildings. I would like to know if there are any glaring errors in this set of instructions.

SIMULATION

Learning how to “simulate” a route or a location will let you test alerts from the comfort of your home. You will also be able to do some trip planning before you actually get to your destination.

Before we actually do a simulation, let’s set up a scenario. Suppose that we are planning a trip to Washington, DC. Also we have some friends that live near the intersection of Dupont Circle and Massachusetts Ave. in Washington. We think we might want to stay somewhere near them, maybe even within walking distance. And, We like Hampton Inns.

Can we get our GPS to assume that we are standing at the intersection of Dupont Circle and Massachusetts Ave? Yes.

Touch Where to and then Intersection. Touch Change State or Country. Touch Spell State or Province and you will be asked to Enter State or Province. When you type a “D”, the GPS should give you choices and you will press “District of Columbia”. Now press the Back button.

Touch intersection and you will be asked to “Spell City”. When you touch Spell City, you will be given various Washington, DC choices. Take the top one.

Now you will be asked to Spell Street 1 and you will type “DUP…” until Dupont Cir NW appears. Select it and you will be asked to Spell Street 2. Start entering “MASS…” and Massachusetts (etc.) will appear. Select it. Select the top of the two choices you will now be given. The next screen will give you the option of Go! but you will select Save. Answer yes to whether you want to save this location to your Favorites.

Now back all the way to the Main Menu (just hold the back button down till you get there - no need to press it multiple times).

Now, get into simulation mode. If you unit has an antenna, you would fold it down. On most units, You would touch Tools (wrench) then Settings and then System. Select the GPS Simulator option and turn simulation On. Press Ok and then hold the Back button down until you get to the Main Menu.

Touch Where to and then Favorites. Touch All Favorites and then use the arrows to find “Massachusetts & Dupont Cir (SW)”. Take that favorite.

The next screen will give you the option of Go! but you will select Map. Press the Set Loc. button to tell your GPS that you are now at “Massachusetts & Dupont Cir (SW)” in Washington, DC. Hold the Back button until you get to the Main Menu.

Now we will find a Hampton. Touch Where To? and then Points of Interest. Touch Lodging and you will get a list of nearby places to stay. Touch Spell and then type in “HAMPTON” and press Done. You have some choices.

Want to see what else is nearby? Try other Points of Interest - say Attractions. There are so many that the “Washington Monument” does not show up in the 50 that it will show. You have to touch Spell and type in “Washington” then Done to find it. It is 1.5 miles away.

Let’s Go there. Your GPS will ask you “Do you want to simulate driving this Route?”. Answer Yes, and you will be on your way. Assuming you have 3D capability, look at all of the 3D buildings! Assuming you have some Custom POIs loaded with icons, you might go past one (on mine, I went by a McDonalds).

OK, that was fun. While you are still in simulation mode, go back to the Main Menu and Go Home. In simulation mode, once the route is calculated, press the bar at the top of the GPS to get into “turn by turn” mode. The arrows will let you see what route you will take. This might be something you would want to use simulation for from other destinations.

Now that you get the idea of what simulation can do, you can imagine doing something similar to test out Icons and Sounds in you own city. Think of a specific nearby POI. Pick an intersection a mile or so PAST that POI (assuming you were to go to the POI from your home). Make it a Favorite. Follow the procedures above to set it as your current location. Go into simulation mode and Go Home. If your Icons and Sounds are correctly loaded, you will see and hear them.

You are a knowledgeable and experienced person and I give you all my respect. I will try this and get back to you with the results.

Did a simulation to NYC Wall Street area and the buildings are there.

Good for you

LMChu, glad you got to see them.

Bear in mind that 3D would not be in every town. Have no idea what combination of city size and/or building height is required to qualify.
