Loading MP3's on a Nuvi 760

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the forum and to GPS ownership as well. Recently purchased a used Nuvi 760 that I intend to use both in my vehicles and on my Honda Transalp motorcycle.

My particular question at this point pertains to loading MP3's on a Kingston 4gb Micro SD card I purchased. When loading the files, can this only be accomplished with the SD card inserted into the Nuvi and hooked up to my PC via the Garmin mini USB data cable or can MP3 files be loaded directly onto the SD card using an SD card reader? The file transfer rate seems agonizingly slow following the Garmin procedure.

yes

Your 760 will read the files, it doesn't care how they get there.

Either Way

Either Way seems to work. I usually leave the SD card in the Nuvi and the SD has it's own drive (H: in my case). I just click and drag the artist/album over to the H: drive. Or I can put it in the reader and it will show up as the F: drive. Click and drag over to the F: drive. Both ways are similar and the Nuvi doesn't seem to care.

Loading MP3's FWIW

In addition to the songs I have on an 8 Gig SD card I put 50 of my fav. mp3's right in the GPS.

That way if my SD card gets damaged (or I forget to put it in) I have a few songs for it to cycle through.

My GPS requires that any album covers are in jpg format. It won't display them if they are bmp.

MP3 and GPS

But it must be told, that if you put anything directly on gps it will take available disk space on device. After some time it may happen that it will be impossible to - for example - update maps to new version as there will be no free space on device. So if you put anything directly on gps then remember of removing it before map update. Otherwise it will be very unpleasant surprise.

something to be aware of...

what I am about to warn you about, was certainly the case when I got my 765T, and the firmware was in the 3.2 range or thereabouts.

At that time, if you were playing mp3's, and you had an audio alert set up as an mp3, the mp3 player would advance to the next track, whenever the mp3 alert would play.

Not a big deal maybe if you are simply playing a list of songs, but unacceptable if trying to listen to podcasts or audiobooks.

The workaround was to use wav files and sox.exe, as the alert sounds.

I don't know if this was ever corrected in subsequent firmware upgrades, as even though I have continued to upgrade my firmware (except for the known troublesome ones...I am currently at 4.00) I have never bothered to change my alert sounds.

Maybe someone else can confirm that the wav file and sox.exe workaround is no longer necessary.

The original post was regarding a 760 as opposed to your 765T. I have the 760 and have never experienced that problem with the mp3 player. I've used it extensively with no problems at all. I use .mp3 alerts for red light cameras and rest areas and have never had a problem with the nüvi 760 advancing my other .mp3 files to the next track.

I probably should have started a separate thread asking if the issue with the 765T had been corrected

Thanks for all the tips and

Thanks for all the tips and advice everyone!

Another question, is it just me or does the Nuvi's Shuffle mode seem to do a poor job at shuffling? Seems like I hear the same songs too soon even though I have about 300-400 loaded onto the SD card.

Nuvi 760 does do a poor job on shuffle

I have a nuvi 760 as well and I find that will over 600 songs, I still hear songs WAY too frequently when i have it on shuffle mode. Just the nature of the player I suppose.

I've thought the same thing about my 660, so I agree with you. Its one of the reasons I use a combination of Shuffle and playlists which I constructed and I know don't have any dups.
