Speed Cameras in School Zones

We have beat this subject to death I know, just the same here is some more fodder for this subject.

Just saw on the news tonight that in the Seattle area they have installed speed cameras in School zones, OUCH.

They interviewed 3 people at random near one school. All three had been ticketed while coming to pick up their kids..... They looked a bit guilty and did not really seem upset.

Beware of school zones

What states currently have

What states currently have speed cameras?

...

They should know better...

timed?

do the speed cameras know what times the school zone is enforced??? certainly an interesting new angle I guess. I'm always careful through them though - the old "regular police officer" hangs around ours....

speed camera at school zones

speed camera at school zones make total sense to me...especially with students going on joyrides...i never did that wink

In Illinois it isn't legal

In Illinois it isn't legal (yet) to permanently mount a speed camera. But they have mobile ones to use. Especially in construction zones.

Best Place

School zones are probably the best place for speed cameras as they will actually contribute to the safety of children. It's public safety not all the money they produce for the cities. See just like our visionary public servants have been tell us all along. Wonder if the school will get a cut of the revenue. Now for my pet peeve, I pass through a 20mph school zone on the way home for work and I wonder why parent are passing me (usually on a cell phone even though there is a $200 fine for using cell in school zone)on the way to pick up their child. Guess parents don't have to observe the school zone speed limit of their childs school. Getting there 20 seconds sooner must be more important than not hitting a child.

I got pulled over at 8:30 PM on a Sunday in the summer in a school zone. I was promptly informed that a school zone is enforced 24/7/365 unless otherwise marked. If you don't see any exceptions on the sign, then there aren't any. At least in New York.

if there are any school zones here that do not have either a flashing yollow with signage that gives the speed limit when the light is flashing or signage that gives the speed linit "When Children Are Present". I prefer the flashing light as I do not have to make the judgment about whether there might be children.

Cannot think of any zones that would be 24/7/365 here.

Maybe some discussion with your traffic engineer would later result in more appropriate signage.

Fight it and win, camerabob!

Supplementry markings are always required.

A school zone speed limit sign without flashing yellow lights, and without a supplementry sign posting the hours the school speed limit is enforced, is illegal in New York State.

There is no such thing as a 24/7 school zone sign.

It seems most school zone signs in my neighborhood are illegal!

False Tickets..

There are too many situations where a false ticket could be given. How are the cameras going to be able to monitor every situation 24/7/365 when things may change one day/week/month or another?

There's just too many variables to do the job correctly.
