A new bug for 1490T firmware 4.40

So, I waited for more than a few reports of the new software's performance and two days ago made the decision to update my 1490T.
Another big mistake as Garmin once again proves Mickey Mouse still works in the software Dept. of Garmin.

I have 438 Favorites saved on my unit that included both business stops, friends and addresses. I also set up three sub-categories in my favorites.
Keep in mind these listings included names, addresses, phone numbers, also cell phone numbers if they fit behind the name in the name field, and also everyone was placed in one or more of the sub-categories. This was working out fine for me... that was until I used it the next day. Some of the addresses numbers have just vanished and the cities have changed to cities of other listings in the Favorite file. This happened with approx. 30% of the fine. It also deleted the phone numbers and messed up all the work I had done with the sub-categories. GRRRRRRRR , this was really time consuming to compile in the first place. Yes, I had the file backed up from a month ago, so I placed the file back into the Garmin. Once again, the file screwed up.

I placed a phone call to Garmin this am, waited 35 minutes and spoke to a CS agent. He told me it is a know issue and I can NOT revert back to a previous firmware, so just re-enter the names by hand on the GPS. Are you freekin kidding me? He said thats the only way to mend the problem until its fixed with another firmware update. He said it could take three weeks to 10 months for that to happen.

Garmin, I've really really tried to stick with you, but you are making it damn near impossible to continue on this path.

You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.

.

Try to backdate to v4.10 (4.20 and 4.30 are not available) but do so *at your own risk*.

http://www.garmin.com/software/nuvi13xxand14xxseries_regionf...

1. Connect the nuvi to the PC
2. Drag the above downloaded file to the WebUpdater icon on your PC
3. After the file transfer, safely disconnect the nuvi from the PC and power-cycle the unit.
4. You -should- get a message asking if you're sure you want to revert to an older software version. If you don't, the unit is likely blocked by Garmin from backdating.

I believe Rayzers was talking about Favorites being corrupted, not POIs.

To Everyone:

Do you have a full backup of your unit?

If not, consider doing so immediately.

BACKING UP YOUR GPS

STEP 1:
Verify that Windows Explorer displays file extensions and hidden files. You should have done this in Beginners Exercise 1. If not, do so now.
STEP 2:
Attach your GPS to your computer with a USB cable. Your PC will show a dialog box for the device. Note the drive letter your PC assigned the device- shown in the upper left corner of the dialog box. One of the options will be to “Open folder to view files”. Take that option.
STEP 3:
Create a new folder on your PC. You could call it something like C:\Garmin Backup 20100605. To create a new folder in your C:\ drive, right click on a blank space in the right pane of Windows Explorer; select NEW > FOLDER and then enter the name of the folder.
STEP 4:
Go to the “Garmin …” drive (let's say it is drive G:\.) Select Drive G:\ in the left pane. Then, click in the right pane of Explorer and do a CNTL-A to select everything. Still in the right pane with everything highlighted, do a CNTL-C to copy everything.
STEP 5:
Navigate back to the folder C:\Garmin Backup 20100605. Click in the right pane and CNTL-V to paste everything.

Now, whatever might happen later during new map updates, etc, you have a backup.

Screwed up favorites

Rayzors, I'm sorry for your loss - man, 438 Favorites done manually. But instead of laboriously creating all of those Favorites and having them at risk inside of your 1490T, why not create a Custom POI file on your PC so that you can just add/delete/alter/reload them as needed? I've got over 700 Custom POI entries loaded in my Nuvi 1450 and maintain them and reload them as required. So far Garmin hasn't figured out how to screw those up yet.

Is there a way to convert the Favorites file to a POI file?

What is the name of the favorites file and can it be opened in something to convert it to a POI file? Sounds like a great idea.

I had to revert backward a version on my Nuvi 660, and it blew away All of my Favorites....

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!

Simple

Save the "Current.gpx" file from your GPS to your computer, rename it something appropriate and then load it back onto your GPS with your other POI files using POI Loader.

Done.

I open mine in EPE, and then save as a .gpx with the rest of my POI's on the SD card.

A handy thing to have after a hard reset when no computer is around!

Just to be sure, did you do a master reset before restoring the backup copy of your favorites?

I have a 1490T. Based upon the experiences of others I, from the beginning, adopted the following practice of updating the software and maps. And, so far all is working well.

* back up my favorites
* install the update
* do a master reset
* restore my favorites from my backup
* re-enter my settings
